FORT MYERS, Fla. - For the sixth time in program history, and fourth in division one history, Florida Gulf Coast University has a no-hitter in the record books. This one came from the right arm of
Angelina Bonilla who only allowed three base runners in the game.
"I was given the printed out box score from [
David Deiros] of my first win at FGCU," Bonilla said. "Pitching this game feels like I came full circle."
This was the first no hitter for the Eagles since Feb 27, 2021 when Marissa Mesiemore threw a no-no in a five-inning run-rule shortened game. This is the only time in FGCU's division one history that a single pitcher has recorded a no-hitter in a full seven inning game.
Following Bonilla's performance, the Eagles had to turn around for the second game of the double header against Queens University of Charlotte.
Allison Sparkman took the mound and continued the hot pitching performance when she carried a no-hitter into the fifth.
"Watching Ang pitch the no-hitter in the first game really inspired me to keep the mojo going. I felt supported the entire game by her and all of my teammates," Sparkman said.
"It's the coolest thing ever to watch Sparky pitch," Bonilla said. "Seeing what she does makes me want to be better. I was in awe of her pitching. She is such an amazing pitcher. She is absolutely dealing and dominating."
The usual offensive game plan for Eagles softball showed up again. This time highlighted by
Olivia Black who stole five bases, scored twice, and went a perfect four-for-four on the day.
Riley Oakes made several tremendous plays in center, allowing the pitching to shine. Oakes also did damage at the dish with a triple that opened up the scoring in Bonilla's no-hitter.
Queens returns to Fort Myers to conclude the ASUN series opener on Sunday at noon.
