Johnson sets all-time record with 70 wins as Eagles spilt matches at UNF

Florida Gulf Coast University's beach volleyball team won its match in the morning against Jacksonville University before dropping a narrow decision against the University of North Florida Friday evening.

Senior Kacie Johnson set a new program record for the most wins, passing the previous record of 69 that assistant coach Snowy Stokes held. Johnson achieved the record as she teamed up with Emma Soncrant to win 21-13, 21-16 against JU.

The Eagles (4-2, 1-2 ASUN) first delivered a 4-1 victory over Jacksonville (2-6, 0-2 ASUN) before rallying to a 3-2 defeat by host UNF (5-2, 1-0 ASUN).

"Today was exactly why all these amazing girls came to play collegiate beach volleyball," said head coach Chris Sweat. "The atmosphere, the intensity of every point, the rivalry between the teams, everything today was why this team worked so hard all year.

"JU played us tough, and then UNF played a great game against us, and I was very proud that when we got down, we battled back to some crazy finishes."

Kaitlyn Luebbers and Nicole De Oliveira won two matches on the day, scoring 21-15, 21-14, while clinching the match for the Eagles against JU. They returned a few hours later to post a 22-20, 21-16 showing at No. 3 versus the Ospreys.

The other winning pairs from the morning match were Manaia Rewi and Mia Thompson, going 21-14, 21-14 at No. 5. Jaci Carpenter and Sydney Majick delivered a 21-17, 21-9 showing at No. 4.

Against UNF Shelby Beisner and Trinity Rosales took a 18-21, 21-17, 15-9 decision versus the Ospreys at court No. 2. for the final point the Eagles would pick up for the day.

FGCU returns to action Saturday as they take on UNF again, this time at 11 a.m. and Mercer University at 1:30 p.m.
