Women's tennis delivers 4-3 victory over Barry

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University's women's tennis team capitalized on home court advantage and defeated Barry University 4-3 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

"The ladies competed hard today and we are making steps each time we compete," said FGCU head women's tennis coach Courtney Vernon. "We are looking forward to next Friday when we play Air Force. We get to honor a wonderful friend and supporter, Donna Sublett, who gave us a gift of a brand new scoreboard."  
 
The Eagles (1-4) won the doubles point as junior Isabella Colmenares and Gabriela Macias won on court 3 with a 6-1 score before graduate student Ida Ferding and senior Fanny Norin clinched the point with a 6-1 victory.

The Buccaneers (1-1) responded in singles as freshman Madeleine Joffe dropped her match 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6, and Ferding fell 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Barry took a 3-1 advantage as junior Lola Glantz was defeated 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
 
The Eagles rallied, and Fanny Norin won on court No. 1 with a strong 6-1, 7-5 showing. Colmenares tied the match, winning 5-7, 6-0, 6-1.

The winning point would be decided on court four, with junior Jordana Ossa representing the Eagles. She pushed through three sets with her home crowd cheering her on to clinch the match with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory.

The Eagles will return to action Friday, Feb. 16 as they host Air Force (1-3) at 10 a.m. and honor Donna Sublett for her contribution of the new scoreboard at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
