FGCU Softball wrapped up the Owl Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over Boston College, 3-1 (8 inn.), and Rhode Island, 8-0 (5 inn.). The BC win was highlighted by another incredible outing from
Angelina Bonilla who went 6.2 innings only allowing one run to cross the plate. The Rhode Island game saw another offensive explosion with a five-run third inning being the deciding factor.
FGCU 3, BC 1 (8 inn.)
In the fourth matchup of Eagles, FGCU pulled the season series with BC tied 2-2 with the victory. The scoring started when
Annalyn Duncan hit a ball deep to center, allowing pinch runner
Olivia Black to open the scoring on the day.
Some aggressive base running by Boston College tied the game up in the sixth and the game headed to extras.
FGCU started to show signs of what was to come against Rhode Island as they put together a solid inning with
Meagan Ricks bringing
Avery Viancos home with a double.
Neely Peterson gave the Green and Blue some insurance with a double of her own to bring in
McKenzie Wittenberg and bring the game to 3-1.
Claire Maulding shut the door on Boston College when she struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.
FGCU 8, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
Coming fresh off a win against BC, FGCU faced Rhode Island and came out swinging. Wittenberg cleared the bases with a triple to right center and came around to score herself giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Maulding got the start fresh off finishing the prior game and went three innings of shutout softball, bringing her total workload on the day to 4.1 innings of runless softball.
Allison Sparkman came on in relief of Maulding, finishing the final two innings without allowing a run, bringing her streak to 17 consecutive innings without allowing a run.
The third inning proved to be another inning of offense for the Eagles. The scoring started when
Sam Leski singled to bring in one run and move everyone over one base.
Caridad Estes then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a runner from third.
Black then stepped up to the plate and decided that this one run at a time thing was getting old and tripled home two RBI.
Riley Oakes brought Black home with a double to bring the game to 8-0.
Sparkman then snuffed out any hope of a Rhode Island comeback and the Eagles picked up the run rule victory.
Up next for the Green and Blue is the USF Tournament where the Eagles will play three games across Sunday and Monday.
