Eagles light up scoreboard against Columbia

FGCU Softball secured the second run rule victory of the season against Columbia, 11-1, on Friday at the Owl Classic in Boca Raton.

In the second game of the day, the Eagles fell to the host FAU Owls, 3-1.

The Eagles increased the winning streak to 31 when scoring at least six runs and improved to 19-0 since last season when stealing at least three bases with the results against Columbia.

The bats were electric with Avery Viancos, Meagan Ricks, McKenzie Wittenberg, and Neely Peterson all getting multi hit games. Viancos recorded four hits, three runs, two RBI, and reached base safely in all five plate appearances.

The game was 2-1 heading into the fourth when the Green and Blue put up a six run inning. Viancos started the ball rolling when she singled up the middle, allowing Emily Chiarella to come around to score.

Ricks would then step up to the plate and put a jolt into the ball, ripping a double to center, scoring two. Peterson joined Ricks in the two RBI knocks when her single brought in Riley Oakes and Ricks.

Wittenberg was the final Eagle to drive in a run when she singled Olivia Black in to culminate the six run inning.

The sixth inning's scoring started in the same way the fourth's ended when Wittenberg doubled home Black to put FGCU up 9-1. Maria Angelino tripled home Wittenberg and Viancos singled Angelino home to finish the offensive thrashing.

In the first true road game for the Green and Blue on the year, Peterson continued her stellar offensive night singling down the right field line to bring home Ricks. Peterson would go 2-for-3 on the night.

Angelina Bonilla continued her string of shut down performances to finish games. Her ERA is now 0.95 overall and an even more paltry 0.39 ERA in relief.

Up next for the Eagles is the final day of the Owl Classic which will feature a double header against Boston College (12:30 p.m.) and Rhode Island (3:00 p.m.)
