Eagles take Diamante Intercollegiate crown

Gauther wins second-straight tournament

A thrilling charge with a team score of nine-under-par over the final eight holes lifted No. 32 Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf to a three-stroke victory at the Diamante Intercollegiate from Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.

"It was a battle all day, but we kept grinding and made some birdies at the end to pull it out," said FGCU head coach Shannon Sykora.

The third win in as many tournaments in the fall season for the Eagles was punctuated by Lousiane Gauthier's individual title. The junior from Uruguay recorded birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to win by two strokes. Gauthier's 20 birdies for the tournament were the most for any player by two. She played the par-3 holes in an average of 2.58 strokes for the three rounds, posting a score of five-under-par for those holes in the tournament. Her aggregate score of 201 is the lowest for any FGCU player in program history.

The Eagles were in a battle with another flock of Eagles as Boston College went back-and-forth for much of the day, with Oral Roberts also sneaking into the early lead. FGCU entered the day with a three-stroke lead, but after 15 holes of the final round, the Green & Blue were tied with BC. On No. 16, FGCU was able to count four pars, while BC had to count a dropped shot. On No. 17, FGCU carded two birdies, with BC managing just one. FGCU would tack on two birdies on No. 18, with BC notching two birdies and a bogey to play the hole just one-under-par. That would give FGCU its three-stroke margin of victory.

Leonie Wulfers tied for the most pars of any player in the three-round event with 40. She would finish with a round of 70 to complete the tournament with a score of 211 (-5) for her third consecutive finish in the top six individually.

Amelie Alcantara rebounded from tough days Sunday and Monday to card a 71 for the third countable score towards FGCU's Tuesday total. She would birdie the last to finish in a tie for 25th.

Posie Farrelly played the back nine Tuesday in 35 to finish in a tie for 30th individually. Farrelly played an even-par 144 over the last two days of the event.

Islay Benoit had countable rounds on Sunday and Monday towards the team score. She would also roll in a birdie at the last to card a 78 to close her event.

But the individual triumph for Gauthier came with history. In addition to her 201, the Uruguayan carded a seven-under-par round for the second time this season. In the second round of the Pat Bradley Invitational Sept. 30, Gauthier posted a 64, the lowest aggregate score for a round in FGCU history. Today's round ties the school record for score to par in a round, tying her own mark from earlier this season and Laura Edmonds' seven-under-par 65 in 2021 at the Pat Bradley Invitational when it played as a Par 72. It also marks her fourth worldwide win of the season after wins at the Pat Bradley, the Uruguayan Match Play, and the Brazilian Amateur.

The third win for the team also sets a new school D-I record for wins. FGCU won four tournaments in the 2002-03 season in NAIA.

FGCU will wrap up the fall season next week at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Florida, hosted by the University of Miami.
