Lousiane Gauthier carded back-to-back birdies on her final two holes to move to five-under-par and take the lead by a stroke after the first round of the Diamante Intercollegiate at the Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas.
The Eagles sit in third place as a team after a first round 287. No. 32 FGCU trails host Little Rock by four shots and No. 57 Boston College by three.
Gauthier had five birdies and 13 pars on the round. After starting her round with a birdie at the first, the native of Uruguay followed with eight-straight pars before converting a birdie on the 10th hole. She would convert a birdie on the par-3 12th hole before four consecutive pars had her at three-under-par heading to No. 17. Gauthier would take advantage of the 262-yard hole to convert a birdie before knocking in another birdie on 18, which played as the easiest hole statistically. The move put her one stroke ahead of Avery Blake from Oral Roberts and Cynthia Zhang of BC.
After a tough double bogey at No. 13 dropped her back to even for the round,
Leonie Wulfers made a birdie at the last to shoot a one-under-par round of 71 to put her in an individual tie for seventh.
Amelie Alcantara shook off a sluggish start to record a birdie at No. 8, following that with 11-straight pars to finish with a two-over-par round of 74.
Islay Benoit would card a three-over-par round of 75 for FGCU's fourth countable score, with
Posie Farrelly just one shot back with a 76.
Little Rock (-5), Boston College (-4), and FGCU (-1) are the only teams of the 18 that are under par after the first round. Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts sit in a tie for fourth with a 289 (+1).
The Eagles will tee off in the final groups Monday off of the first hole during the second round alongside Little Rock and BC. The final groups will tee off from 10:06 a.m through 10:38 a.m. CDT.
