FORT MYERS, Fla. - On the cusp of starting league play this season, Florida Gulf Coast University swept the Atlantic Sun Conference's weekly awards for men's basketball as
Zach Anderson was named Player of the Week and
Dallion Johnson was named Newcomer of the Week. Both awards were announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.
Anderson had his first double-double of the season in FGCU's upset of then-No. 7 Florida Atlantic University. The junior had 21 points and 10 rebounds, with 13 of his points coming in the second half. Anderson connected on eight shots from the field, including three 3-pointers. The Apopka native also had the rebound to end FAU's final full possession of the game after a game-tying shot by the Owls went by the wayside.
Johnson, in his first year with the Eagles, had 18 points in the win over FAU. With 1:10 left to go, the Boston native drained his third 3-pointer of the second half to give the Eagles the lead for good. Johnson missed just one shot in the second half en route to 13 points in the deciding period. His seven made field goals tied a career-high, with his point total just one short of the best mark in his career.
The awards from the ASUN are the first two for the Eagles this season. FGCU will look to build on its three-game winning streak this Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Alico Arena against Jacksonville University as ASUN play begins for the season.
