Comeback falls short at Queens for FGCU

Franco Miller, Jr., scored a career-high 18 points as Florida Gulf Coast University dropped a 78-75 decision to Queens University of Charlotte in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action Wednesday night in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Miller was joined with 18 points by Zach Anderson. Keeshawn Kellman fell one rebound short of his third double-double in a row after netting 16 points. The Eagles shot 21-of-39 (53.8 percent) on shots from inside the 3-point line, but the Eagles would go 9-of-16 from the charity stripe as a team.

The Eagles (7-11, 1-2 ASUN) would use a 9-0 run in the middle stages of the first half to take a 29-24 lead. While FGCU led for most of the final 7:38 of the first half, a shot in the waning seconds of the period tied the score at 35-all through 20 minutes.

The Eagles would slowly build a five-point advantage, 56-51, with 9:50 left in the second half. The Royals (7-10, 1-1 ASUN) would come back, with back-to-back 3-pointers by Chris Ashby giving the Royals the lead for good, 63-60.

Queens would hold a 77-70 lead in the final minute, but the Eagles would get five of the next six points from the hands of Miller. After a pair of misses at the free-throw line by the Royals, FGCU would have a chance to tie on its last possession, but the final attempt from long range would come up short, bouncing off the iron to give the home side the win. In the three meetings all-time between the two teams, Queens has won twice when FGCU shots didn't fall at the buzzer.

The Eagles will be back in action Friday night at Kennesaw State University in another ASUN contest. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
