Despite Lojewski's 2 HRs, Eagles Tumble to Ospreys

FGCU-North Florida box score | 2023 FGCU baseball stats | 2023 FGCU schedule

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite two home runs Saturday from junior infielder Jacob Lojewski (West Palm Beach, Fla./Delray American Heritage HS), the FGCU baseball team absorbed a second straight loss to North Florida – falling 11-7 to the Ospreys at Harmon Stadium.

The setback assured only the second ASUN series loss for FGCU (36-14 overall, 8-8 ASUN) this season, and dropped the Eagles 1½ games behind Lipscomb for the conference lead. North Florida, which is battling to secure a spot in the ASUN Championship that FGCU locked down Friday night, improved 28-23 overall and 13-13 in the ASUN.

"I felt like we were playing ourselves today," said FGCU head coach Dave Tollett. "They took walks in good at-bats and capitalized on them, just like we do. That isn't much fun to watch from the other side. If you break down the game, they scored 10 runs with two outs – and nine of them with no one on and two outs."

FGCU's offense delivered considerably more than it did in Friday's 9-1 loss to open the series – rattling off 10 hits to double the output from the night before. But Lojewski produced all but one of the Eagles' runs on just two swings. Entering Saturday with 16 homers, Lojewski belted a two-run shot to left-center field in the seventh. Just an inning later, Lojewski cranked a line-drive grand slam to left.

By the time Lojewski began perfecting his home-run trot, though, the Green & Blue were looking up once again at the Opsreys on the scoreboard. FGCU opened with a 1-0 lead in the first via a sacrifice fly from sophomore infielder Edrick Felix (Orlando, Fla./Victory Charter HS/College of Central Florida), but surrendered that lead in the bottom of the first and went down 2-1 through two innings.

North Florida widened its lead with a three-run fourth inning, and made it 9-1 with a four-run fifth. The Ospreys also equaled Lojewski's first homer with one of their own in the seventh to extend their advantage to 11-3.

FGCU now has hit 117 home runs through 50 games, which leads the nation. The Eagles are also the only program in the country with at least 110 doubles (FGCU has 110) and 110 homers.

A day after his national-record 117-game streak of reaching base safely, FGCU graduate outfielder Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Lojewski led the Eagles with three hits, and senior infielder Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) added two hits. Freshman right-hander Justin Henschel (Plantation, Fla./South Plantation HS) absorbed the loss for FGCU, with Dominick Madonna earning the victory.

The two teams conclude the weekend series at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. FGCU is expected to start senior left-hander Stephen Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/Pasco-Hernando State/ECU) against UNF right-hander Clayton Boroski.
