Men's Golf Finishes 15th At Seminole Intercollegiate

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 56 FGCU men's golf team finished 15th on Tuesday at the Seminole Intercollegiate.

FGCU concluded round two this morning with its best team score of the event, a 302. The Eagles then followed with 313 to post a 924 final score.

Eighth-ranked tournament host Florida State galloped away with the team title at 14-under-par 850. FSU's Grey Albright captured the individual title for the Seminoles at 10-under for the tournament, firing three straight rounds in the 60s.

"I'm really proud of our team," said FGCU men's golf head coach Andrew Danna. "We are looking forward to our next opportunity to compete on Friday."

Both senior Pierre Viallaneix (Apopka, Fla./Winter Park HS/Western Carolina) and fifth-year Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Hockerill Anglo-European College/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) finished tied for 46th to pace the Eagles. Viallaniex fired the lowest round among any Eagle at the event with his even-par 72 in round two.

Of the 22 birdies made by FGCU, Hopkins led all Eagles in the category with seven.

Junior Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) improved each round after opening with a 79. He carded a round-two 78 and then closed with a 75, shaving four strokes, to enter the clubhouse at 16-over and tied for 56th

Freshman Sam Baker (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) finished 73rd and Junior Thomas Salanito (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) placed tied for 76th to round out the starting five for FGCU.

The Green & Blue now heads to Statesboro, Ga., on Friday-Sunday for The Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern.

HEAD COACH ANDREW DANNA
Danna is in his fourth year at the helm of the men's golf program with the Eagles earning FGCU's first-ever NCAA Tournament at-large berth in department history during the 2022 season. He has led the Eagles to second-place finishes at the 2021 and 2022 ASUN Championships and was named the program's first-ever ASUN Coach of the Year (2021) and repeated in 2022. One of the best turnarounds in NCAA history saw the Green and Blue, led by Van Holmgren who became the first player to earn PING All-Region honors, jump from No. 257 in the final 2019-20 GolfStat.com rankings to a then program-best 65 to close out 2020-21. The Eagles set a new program-best during the 2022 season at No. 47 in the GolfStat.com rankings. Holmgren won the ASUN Championship individual title to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Before taking over in Fort Myers, he served the 2018-19 season as the assistant at LSU. Prior to that he was the ultra-successful head coach for six years at Lynn University where he led them to the 2018 NCAA Division II national championship and was, subsequently, chosen the David Williams National Coach of the Year. He also led the Fighting Knights to three national runner-up placements, with a third and eighth place finish in his other two seasons.
