MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf team closed out the first tournament of the season on Tuesday, doing so with a team score of 847 (-17) to land in a tie with Clemson for second place. The tournament featured 90 competitors from 16 different schools and was hosted by Coastal Carolina at Grande Dunes Golf Resort Club.
Sophomore
Nolan Harper (-8) was FGCU's top individual, turning in a three-round total of 208 to finish in a tie for fifth place. Harper produced round scores of 69 in the opening and final rounds, sandwiching a 70 between them on Monday.
Brett Moore (-5) started the event off strong, as his 67 on Sunday put him in a tie for second place. Moore finished his week with a total of 211, good enough to tie for eighth and give the Eagles two individuals inside the top ten.
Sophomore
Sacha Ruiz (-3) came away with round scores of 69, 72 and 72 to tie for 16th, while teammate
Sebastian Gamboa (-1) gave FGCU four players under par.
Tom Scullion rounded out the scoring for the Eagles, tying for 33rd place with a total score of 217.
Harper and Ruiz both picked up an eagle in the second round, and both did so on the seventh hole, a 571-yard par-five. Moore led the way in birdies, scoring 13 of them over the three-day event.
The Eagles are set to return to action on September 28, when they open the Jim Delapa Intercollegiate hosted by Central Michigan.
