Eagles Aim to Equal All-Time Best Start vs. FIU

2023 FGCU baseball stats | 2023 FGCU schedule

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 2023 FGCU baseball team (7-1) aims to equal its best start in program history Tuesday, as the Eagles take on the FIU Panthers at 6:30 p.m. at Swanson Stadium. Home games in 2023 are broadcast on EagleVision, which is free to view on www.FGCUAthletics.com.

The Green & Blue started the 2008 season with an 8-1 record, and an eighth straight home victory in 2022-23 would match that mark. Standing in the way is a Panthers team that is 3-5 and riding a three-game losing streak.

FGCU swept visiting UMass Lowell in a three-game set last weekend – which included two come-from-behind victories both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's 7-6 victory was of the walk-off variety, as junior catcher Mac Moise (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) delivered a pinch-hit single to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Sunday's 7-5 win was secured with a four-run FGCU eighth inning sparked by a solo homer by senior pitcher/outfielder Stephen Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/Pasco-Hernando State/ECU) and finished with an RBI single by senior catcher/infielder Alejandro Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Montverde Academy/Eastern Florida State).

Senior first baseman Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) leads the Green & Blue with a .452 batting average, followed closely by junior infielder/pitcher Jacob Lojewski (West Palm Beach, Fla./Delray American Heritage HS) at .450. Lojewski, junior infielder Edrick Felix (Orlando, Fla./Victory Charter HS/College of Central Florida) and senior catcher/infielder Alejandro Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Montverde Academy/Eastern Florida State) each have 10 RBIs. Felix has belted four of FGCU's 12 home runs, with Lojewski adding three homers.

FGCU expects to start senior right-hander Tyler Tipton (Tampa, Fla./Gaither HS) on the mound Tuesday, and he will oppose FIU right-hander Christian Santana.

The Eagles own a 12-7 all-time record against the Panthers, including four straight victories. FGCU and FIU haven't played since 2019, with FGCU winning the last game 11-6 in Miami.

FIU first baseman Ryne Guida leads the Panthers with a .414 batting average and 11 RBIs. Outfielder Mike Rosario is the only Panther with multiple homers in 2023, having hit two.
The Green & Blue embark on a 13-day road trip after Tuesday's game, heading to Tallahassee to take on Florida State in a three-game weekend series, playing at Troy on March 7-8, and then headed back to Tallahassee for three against Florida A&M on March 10-12.
