FGCU-UMass Lowell box score | 2023 FGCU baseball stats | 2023 FGCU schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 2023 FGCU baseball team (5-1) continued its impressive early-season power surge Friday night, belting three home runs in an 8-2 victory over UMass Lowell at Swanson Stadium.
Junior infielder
Edrick Felix (
Orlando, Fla./Victory Charter HS/College of Central Florida) hit two homers against the River Hawks – solo shots in both the second and fourth innings. Junior infielder
Jacob Lojewski (
West Palm Beach, Fla./Delray American Heritage HS) added a solo homer right after Felix in the second. The Green & Blue have piled up nine home runs in six games so far in 2023.
Felix and sophomore infielder
Jake Mummau (
Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS/St. Petersburg College) each went 3-for-4. Senior outfielder
Jalen Townsend (
Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS) was 2-for-4, and redshirt senior outfielder
Brian Ellis (
Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) went 1-for-5 with an RBI – increasing his streak of reaching base to 75 games.
Junior right-hander
Jason Woodward (
Titusville, Fla./Titusville HS) earned his second straight victory this season as FGCU's Friday night starter, striking out 10 in five innings of work and allowing just two hits over 98 pitches.
The Felix-Lojewski outburst, coupled with Townsend's RBI single, against UMass Lowell starter LJ Keevan (0-2) gave Woodward and the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Mummau drove in two more runs with his base hit to left field in the third, Townsend again singled in a run, and Ellis drove in Mummau for a 6-0 cushion in the third inning.
"We challenged the bottom of our lineup to be better than they have been in the last couple games," said FGCU head baseball coach
Dave Tollett. "That is where the game was done. The goal (Saturday) is to play nine innings, though, because I don't think we played the full nine tonight. We have to get better."
Perhaps buoyed by a new homemade bleach-blonde hairdo, Felix launched his second homer of the night in the fourth – a blast to left-center that made it 8-0.
The River Hawks got on the board in the eighth via a sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Robert Gallagher.
The two teams resume the three-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swanson Stadium. FGCU is scheduled to start left-hander
Mason Miller (1-0, 3.86 ERA) opposite UMass Lowell right-hander Brian Foley (0-1, 18.00).
