Eagles Walk Off River Hawks, Stay Unbeaten at Home in 2023

FGCU-UMass Lowell box score| 2023 FGCU baseball stats | 2023 FGCU schedule

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 2023 FGCU baseball team (6-1) turned in its most dramatic victory of the young 2023 season Saturday afternoon, as junior catcher Mac Moise (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker HS) delivered a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning to outlast UMass Lowell 7-6 at Swanson Stadium.

The victory is FGCU's fifth in a row at home this season, and it drops the River Hawks to 0-5.

Junior infielder/pitcher Jacob Lojewski (West Palm Beach, Fla./Delray American Heritage HS) continued his torrid start, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Both junior outfielder Harrison Povey (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) and senior designated hitter Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) hit home runs.

FGCU almost wasted a superb start by junior pitcher Mason Miller (Odessa, Fla./Mitchell HS), who was sterling through five compete innings – not allowing a hit and striking out 11 on 88 pitches.

"Five innings and no hits with 11 punchies is so good, and he has been great so far as a 1-2 combination with Woody," said FGCU head baseball coach Dave Tollett of Miller's Saturday presence behind junior right-hander Jason Woodward (Titusville, Fla./Titusville HS). "We just kinda went through the motions a little bit at times, and I thought we would be better than that. It is not up to our expectations."

The Eagles overcame a two-error lead in the top of the first that allowed a UMass Lowell run when Povey launched a two-run homer to right and Lojewski got plunked with the bases loaded for a 3-1 advantage.

The Green & Blue added to its lead in the third via Lojewski's RBI single to left, and made it 5-1 with Figueredo belted a solo shot to center field.

The River Hawks would score a run in the seventh on an FGCU passed ball, and took a 6-5 lead in the eighth courtesy of shortstop Fritz Genther's opposite-field three-run homer.

"That kind of woke us up," Tollett said. "It seems like in the middle innings we are taking melatonin or something. We need to play nine and keep the pressure on, to add more when we have the lead."

That deficit wouldn't last long, however, as senior first baseman Joe Kinker (Titusville, Fla./Venice HS) just missed a homer to right that still easily sacrificed Povey in from third to make it 6-6.

FGCU turned a huge inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, and then loaded the bases in the bottom half on base hits by Lojewski and junior infielder Edrick Felix (Orlando, Fla./Victory Charter HS/College of Central Florida) and an intentional walk to sophomore infielder Jake Mummau (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS/St. Petersburg College).

Moise drew the pinch-hitting assignment, and smacked a 1-0 pitch down the left-field line to score Felix and touch off a wild celebration in the middle of the Swanson Stadium diamond.

The two teams complete the three-game series at 10 a.m. Saturday at Swanson Stadium. FGCU is scheduled to Lojewski (0-0, 4.91 ERA) opposite UMass Lowell graduate right-hander Matt Draper (0-1, 9.64 ERA).
