FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball is set to host the Homewood Suites Classic starting Wednesday at Alico Arena.
The Eagles welcome Cleveland State (9-2), Drexel (4-4) and Southern Miss (7-1) to the City of Palms. FGCU will take on Drexel Wednesday and turn around to face Southern Miss on Thursday. FGCU (7-4) has enjoyed a 10-day rest break between its last outing, an 82-63 defeat at Duke on December 10. The Eagles will be vying to protect its 18-game home winning streak, the sixth-longest active home winning streak in the nation.
The Green and Blue enters the classic ranked No. 6 in CollegeInsider.com's Mid Major Top 25 Poll and have received votes in the Associated Press Poll twice this season. FGCU is the only mid-major program with four straight Top 25 finishes in the AP Poll over the last four seasons. The Green and Blue has finished in the Top 25 in five out of the previous six years.
FGCU, South Carolina, Stanford and UConn are the only four D-I programs to record 30 or more wins in three of the last five seasons. The Eagles went 33-4 a season ago, winning their 13th Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title and ninth ASUN Tournament Championship, along with capturing their fourth-ever NCAA Tournament victory.
The Green and Blue soared into the 2023-24 season as the all-time winningest program in women's college basketball history with a winning percentage of .845. Smesko's squad has led the nation in made 3-pointers per game for four consecutive seasons and is currently ranked No. 28 in the category with 8.8 per game.
