Men’s soccer drops 3-1 decision at FAU

The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision in non-conference action against American Athletic Conference member Florida Atlantic University at the FAU Soccer Stadium Tuesday in Boca Raton, Fla.

Alon Drey scored his first goal of the season with an assist by Zeke Oswald, while sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Copeland stayed in between the pipes for all 90 minutes and made one save.

"We didn't have the right approach and mindset to start the game," head coach Jesse Cormier said. "In the second half, we were better and needed to convert our early chances to get back in the game.

"But generally, FAU was more committed and competitive moment to moment and deserved the win tonight, but we have plenty of lessons to improve for Saturday against Queens with playoff implications on the line."

Even though the Owls (5-6-3) won, they were tied shot-for-shot with the Eagles (3-6-5) as both teams registered six shots, with four being on goal.  In the first half, Linus Dahl took the first shot of the game at 8:36 but the Owls settled into the game and took one shot before Zach Hassell scored and placed FAU on the scoreboard at 21:23. The Eagles were not able to fire any shots for the next 10 minutes and the Owls stretched its lead as Leon Reilhac fired a shot in the center of the net at 32:22 to take a 2-0 advantage.

Defense ruled for the final 13 minutes of the half, and neither team took a shot as the Owls entered the locker room up by two goals.

In the second half, the Green & Blue picked up its momentum, firing off four shots, with two coming from Jaffer Murphy in the first 20 minutes, but none connected. FAU responded with a third goal in the 81st minute as Victor Claudel received a pass from Joep Wouters and buried it in the left side of the net.

The Eagles kept searching for the answer, and Drey picked up the call as he took a feed from Oswald before firing the ball to the right side of the net with 2:01 left on the clock.

Oswald's goal was the game's final action as the Owls wrapped up the 3-1 victory.

The Eagles will return to ASUN action, taking on Queens University of Charlotte Saturday at 4 p.m. in Charlotte, N.C. The Royals are sixth in the league with six points, while the Eagles are tied for third with Jacksonville University.
