FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University women's soccer earned a 1-1 draw Sunday against Queens University of Charlotte at Pickering Field.
"Tough day and lesson," head coach Jim Blankenship said. "We had ample opportunities to put the game away, and then to give up a counter attack goal is disappointing."
Entering Sunday, the Eagles (7-4-2, 4-1-1 ASUN) had won five out of their last six. FGCU landed on SportCenter's Top 10 twice during the stretch. The red-hot Eagles kept their recent momentum flowing into the first half as Ashley Labbe notched her second goal of the season in the 31st minute.
Labbe's placement on the goal rendered the Royals' goalie motionless. Eden Bretzer was credited with the assist, setting up Labbe from midfield. FGCU took a comfortable 1-0 lead heading into the break.
Labbe nearly found the back of the net twice Sunday. One of her team-leading nine shots, a personal season high, ricocheted off the top of the crossbar.
The Eagles struggled to put Queens (3-4-5, 1-3-4 ASUN) away. The Royals produced their equalizer in the 66th minute, forcing FGCU to settle for the tie and remain in third place in the ASUN regular season race.
Labbe and Kendal Gargiula teamed up in the 74th minute with a potential response. Labbe sneaked a low cross ball through the box, but Gargiula could not get her foot on the ball in time.
Offensively, FGCU outmaneuvered Queens in shot attempts, 22-8, and in corner opportunities, 12-2. The Eagles also failed to capitalize on its 10 first-half corners.
Goalkeeper Olivia Molina added four saves between the pipes.
