KENNESAW, Ga. - Sophomore
Ian Farrow (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) carried the FGCU baseball team to a Mother's Day victory on Sunday, hitting two home runs and driving in seven in a 10-9 win over Kennesaw State. The Eagles improve to 29-18 and 14-10 in the ASUN while the Owls fall to 27-21 and 15-9 in league play.
"Ian was great today," said head coach
Dave Tollett. "He has been a little streaky this year, but hopefully this weekend is the start of new hot streak for him. We gave up nine runs, so obviously our pitching wasn't great, but we get two big performances from [Tyler] Tipton for a couple of innings and then Josh [Seils] for two huge outs to end the game. Big weekend upcoming with Liberty coming to town."
In addition to Farrow, the Eagles also had multi-hit performances from redshirt-junior
Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS), sophomore
Kyle Machado (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS), graduate student
Logan Sartori (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southwest HS/Texas A&M/Hutchinson CC). For Ellis, he has now reached base in 58 straight games, just seven shy of Zach Maxfield's FGCU record of 65, which he set in 2010-11.
After senior
Joey Mugavero (Estero, Fla./Estero HS/Florida Southwestern State) started the game with two scoreless innings, the Eagles took the lead in the third on a single from Ellis and a three-run home run off the bat of Farrow.
Kennesaw got two runs back in the bottom of the inning, but freshman
Harrison Povey (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) answered with his 13th home run of the season in the fourth to push the Eagle lead back up to 5-2.
Junior
Alejandro Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Montverde Academy/Eastern Florida State) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but the Owls made it a brand new ball game in the home half as they scored four runs to tie up the game.
As the Eagles did yesterday when KSU tied the game, they responded right away as Farrow delivered an RBI single in the sixth.
Junior
Tyler Tipton (Tampa, Fla./Gaither HS/South Florida State), who came in to get out of the fifth inning, kept the Owl bats quiet for the next two innings before Farrow provided much-needed insurance with his second three-run home run of the day in the eighth to push the Eagle lead to 10-6.
KSU did not go down easily, however, as the Owls scored one in the eighth. In the ninth, they tacked on another run and had the bases loaded with just one out when graduate student
Josh Seils (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood HS/Towson) came in out of the bullpen. After nearly getting a double play against his first batter, he regrouped and induced a flyout to deep right field to secure the one-run victory.
The Eagles picked up a game on the Owls in the ASUN standings with the series win and have won four of six games against KSU this season. The Green and Blue still sit two games behind Liberty for the top spot, but they have a big opportunity next weekend when the Flames make the trip to Swanson Stadium for a three-game series.
Before facing Liberty next weekend, the Eagles will host Florida Atlantic on Tuesday evening. First pitch against the Owls is set for 6:30 p.m.

Additionally, in just 10 seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 45 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 25 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
