Wilmer Wins It for Baseball with FGCU's Second-Straight Walk-Off

FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second day in a row, the FGCU baseball team walked-off Kennesaw State, this time off the bat of junior Stephen Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/Pasco-Hernando State/ECU), who hit an RBI single with two outs in the tenth to take down the Owls, 7-6. The Eagles improve to 20-8 and 7-2 in the ASUN while the Owls fall to 18-9 and 7-2 as well in league play.

"We'll take them any way we can," said head coach Dave Tollett. "Both teams are really good. What a great series for us. We got a great effort from Mugavero today out of the bullpen and a big hit by Stephen Wilmer. Just a great, great win against a great team."

Wilmer's walk-off came in a pinch-hitting situation and just a day after junior Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) won the game on Saturday as the Eagles earned a series win against the number 11 team in the RPI.

Junior Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) led the Eagles with three hits on the day while freshman Harrison Povey (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) and junior Luis Rodriguez (Guarenas, Venezuela/Miami Christian HS/Santa Fe College/Dyersburg State) each added home runs.

On the mound, senior Joey Mugavero (Estero, Fla./Estero HS/Florida Southwestern State) was stellar as he threw five innings in relief and allowed just one run while striking out four. Junior Tyler Tipton (Tampa, Fla./Gaither HS/South Florida State) earned the win after throwing a perfect tenth inning.

Kennesaw jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with two runs in the first and another in the second. Rodriguez got one run back in the bottom of the second with a run-scoring fielder's choice.

After the Owls tacked on a fourth run in the third, Povey tied up the game in the bottom half with a three-run home run, his eighth of the season.

KSU retook the lead in the fourth with a run but again the Eagles responded as graduate student Logan Sartori (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Southwest HS/Texas A&M/Hutchinson CC) knocked in a run with an RBI single.

Mugavero and Kennesaw's Smith Pinson traded zeroes for the next three innings until Rodriguez connected on a solo home run in the eighth to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Owls hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie up the game.

In the bottom of the tenth, Figueredo led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Jalen Townsend (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park HS), who proceeded to steal second. After a couple of strikeouts and an intentional walk, Wilmer walked to the plate where he looped a 2-2 pitch down the right-field line allowing the speedy Townsend to score easily.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to face #12 Miami. First pitch from Coral Gables is set for 6 p.m.
