FORT MYERS, Fla. – After posting a prolific season as one of the nation's top scoring point guards, FGCU basketball guard
Tavian Dunn-Martin has been named a finalist for the Lou Henson Player of the Year Award which is presented annually to the top mid-major Division I men's basketball player in the country.
Dunn-Martin became the first player in program history to score over 700 points in a single-season setting a new record for the Eagles as he finished the past year with 705. He was one of just 21 players since 1992-93 to have over 700 points and 195 assists in a single season alongside all-time greats such as Penny Hardaway, Ja Morant, Shabazz Napier, Jay Williams, Cassius Winston, and Trae Young.
Overall for the year, Dunn-Martin averaged 21.4 points, 6.0 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals in 33 games. He was just shy of reaching 200 assists on the year with 198 total. Along with his single-season FGCU record for total points, he set the new mark for scoring average, ranked third in field goals made, third in made field goals (106), first in free throws made (159), and fourth in assists.
Nationally, he ranked sixth in assists per game, seventh in total assists, ninth in points per game, 10
th in total threes, and 15
th in threes per game.
Just before the postseason started, the Huntington, West Virginia, native was named the ASUN Newcomer of the Year and an All-ASUN First Team selection.
Prior to FGCU, Dunn-Martin played three seasons at Duquesne where he was the 2018-19 Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year and ranked eighth all-time in Dukes history with 149 three pointers. He began his college career at Akron in 2016-17. He finished his overall collegiate career with 1,588 career points in 149 games. In those games, he posted 288 made three pointers, had 455 career assists, and recorded 138 career steals.
The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in division I college basketball, honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.
Henson is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989.
Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.

COACH CHAMBERS
Pat Chambers, an 11-year veteran head coach, was officially introduced by Director of Athletics
Ken Kavanagh as the fifth FGCU men's basketball head coach in March 2022 bringing a wealth of experience in college basketball including head coaching stints at Penn State and Boston University. Chambers spent nine years leading the Penn State (2011-20) program and two years as head coach at Boston University (2009-11). He has 190 career victories as a head coach in that span including four 20-plus win seasons. Part of his career as a head coach was highlighted by leading the Nittany Lions to a No. 9 national ranking in 2019-20 which tied the program's best-ever ranking set in 1996. In addition to his head coaching experience, Chambers has served in various capacities with three different programs. At Villanova, he started with the Wildcats in 2004 as the Director of Operations before being elevated to Assistant Coach (2006-08) and then Associate Head Coach (2008-09). He started his coaching career at Delaware Valley College in 1995-96 and most recently served as an assistant coach at La Salle.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 90 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 10 seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 44 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 25 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
