FORT MYERS, Fla. – After a big opening weekend which included a win over #8 Texas, the FGCU softball team returns to the field for week two of the season, beginning with #14 Missouri on Wednesday and concluding with the FGCU Invitational over the weekend.

The Eagles currently sit at 2-2 on the season with the aforementioned win over the Longhorns as well as a victory over LIU at the FGCU Kickoff Classic this past weekend. The win over eighth-ranked Texas was the highest ranked win for the Green and Blue since defeating #6 Florida in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Estroff Named ASUN Player of the Week
Senior
Emily Estroff (Coconut Creek, Fla./Coral Springs HS/Villanova) was named ASUN Player of the Week after a big weekend in the circle, at the plate, and in the field. In the win against Texas, Estroff threw six innings and allowed just five hits and three earned runs while striking out three against the high-powered Longhorn offense.
At the plate in the victory, she went 2-for-3 with three RBI including a two-run triple to tie the game in the second inning. The next day against Texas, she added another run-scoring extra-base hit with an RBI double to give the Eagles the early lead. She also shined at second base, making two diving plays to keep Texas off the board early in the game.
Newcomers Report
A couple of transfers had strong opening weekends at the FGCU Kickoff Classic. Redshirt-senior
Cana Davis (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby HS/Virginia Tech) started her Eagle career with five straight hits, including a 3-for-3 performance against LIU before adding two hits against #15 Clemson. She added another hit against #8 Texas, finishing the weekend with a .600 (6-for-10) average.
Junior
Riley Oakes (Oviedo, Fla/Bishop Moore Catholic HS/Radford) also got her FGCU career off to a fast start, hitting .400 with a triple and two RBI. She also picked up the save against Texas, tossing a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the upset for the Eagles.
Missouri
The Tigers enter Wednesday's matchup as a consensus top-25 team, ranked as high as #14 by d1softball.com. They currently sit at 3-2 on the season after playing at the Northern Lights Invitational where they defeated Penn State, Wisconsin, and #24 Liberty while falling to UConn and #10/#13 Virginia Tech.
The Tigers pitching seems to be strong as their top-three pitcher– Jordan Weber, Emma Nichols, and Megan Schumacher have combined to give up just five earned runs in 26.0 innings while striking out 27.
Mizzou was picked fifth in the preseason SEC coaches' poll, undoubtedly the strongest conference in the nation, and will be led on offense by three preseason All-SEC selections, Jenna Laird, Hatti Moore, and Brooke Wilmes.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
Austin Peay
Austin Peay will be joining the ASUN next season, but FGCU will get an early look at the Governors this weekend. APSU opened the season at the Stinger Classic, going 4-1 with two wins against Alabama State and one each over Purdue Fort Wayne and the College of Charleston.
The Govs swept the OVC weekly awards as Kylie Campbell was named OVC Player of the Week while Jordan Benefiel collected OVC Pitcher of the Week. Campbell, a freshman catcher/utility player batted .462 this past weekend with a team-leading nine RBI to go with three runs scored. For Benefiel, she went 2-0 this past weekend, with a 0.98 ERA in 21.1 innings of work, including a two-hit shutout of Alabama State on Friday to open the season.
APSU also received votes in the latest NFCA Coaches' poll.
The Eagles and Governors have met once before, a 10-0 win for FGCU back in 2010.
Belmont
For Belmont, this will be their first game action of the 2022 season after compiling a 15-26 record in 2021.
Cheyenne Cavanaugh was named an OVC Player to watch before the season. The fifth-year senior finished with a .376 batting average in 2021 accumulating 47 hits and 15 stolen bases for the Bruins. Cavanaugh was nationally ranked fifth in triples, seventh in triples per game, also leading the league in triples. As the 60th hardest player to strike out nationally, Cavanaugh was tabbed to the All-OVC Second Team.
The two teams have met 10 times before, but have not played since Belmont left the ASUN after the 2012 season. FGCU holds a 9-1 advantage in the series.
Boston College
The Eagles return to Fort Myers after playing in the FGCU Kickoff Classic this past weekend where they went 3-2. They picked up two wins over Kent State and another victory over LIU while falling to #8/#10 Texas twice.
Hannah Slike led the Eagles with a .471 batting average and five RBI while Darien McDonough hit .333 with BC's only home run of the weekend.A trio of pitchers picked up wins for the Eagles, led by Peyton Schnackenberg, who has a 2.33 ERA with seven strikeouts in 9.0 innings pitched.
FGCU leads the all-time series 4-1.
Memphis
The Tigers enter this weekend with a 2-3 record playing at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Mexico this past weekend, defeating Long Beach State and Rutgers.
Cameron Wineinger had a big opening weekend at the plate for Memphis, hitting .467 with a home run and four RBI. Hallie Siems and Mikayla Hoschak split most of the time in the circle in Mexico and each has ERAs under three. Siems also leads the Tigers with eight strikeouts.
FGCU and Memphis have met five times in the past with the Tigers holding a 3-2 series advantage, but the Eagles have won two of the last three matchups.

COACH DEIROS
The founding father of FGCU softball,
David Deiros is in his 20th season as head coach during the 2022 campaign. Hired in 2001 to build the program from the dirt up, Deiros has since guided the Eagles to a 690-366-3 (.654), going 162-93 (.632) in the ASUN, having 15 seasons with a winning record, and nine campaigns with 35 wins. Deiros is a former head coach at the 1998 Florida State Runner-up Lely High School in Naples and is the founding head coach of the 1999 District Champion/2001 Regional Runner-up Gulf Coast High School in Naples.

FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 87 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 43 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 25, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent.
