Eagles Battle As ITA Southeast Regional Action Begins

ATLANTA - Three members of the FGCU women's tennis squad represented the Green and Blue during day one action of the ITA Southeast Regionals Thursday.

"Didn't get the results that we would have liked to see today, but tournaments like these will only make them better going forward," assistant coach Natalia Maynetto said. "This experience will set us up for success against the ASUN come spring. Looking forward to main-draw action tomorrow."

In singles qualifying draw, Ida Ferding (Sweden) battled Cliona Walsh from USF and Jordana Ossa (Miami, Fla.) took on Carla Galmiche out of FAU. Both Eagles dropped their respective Round of 32 matches and were eliminated from qualifying draw contention.

Ferding lost in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3, while Ossa forced a third-set 10-point tie break. Ossa put up a valiant effort against her in-state opponent but would eventually fall 5-7, 6-2 and 6-10. Both Eagle opponents went on to win their their Round of 16 match as well, advancing to the qualifying quarterfinals.

In qualifying doubles, Ossa and Fanny Norin (Sweden) laced up for the Eagles and faced Cade Cricchio and Olympe Lancelot from Florida State. Ossa and Norin made the Seminole duo earn an 8-6 victory as the Eagle pair was eliminated.

No consolation flights are scheduled for qualifying singles and doubles flights.

Main draw singles and doubles will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. with one round of doubles (Round of 32) followed by two singles rounds (Round of 64 and 32). Singles will start at approximately 11 a.m. All matches will be played outside unless of inclement weather. Consolation is scheduled for both main draw singles and doubles flights.

Norin will face fifth-seeded Isabella Pfennig from Miami tomorrow in the Round of 64, and Emma Bardet (France) will face Mary Weston Courville from Mercer.

In main draw doubles, the Ferding and Berdet duo is scheduled to square off against sixth-seeded Bente Spee and Rachel Gailis out of Florida in Round of 32 action.

The main draw singles champions and finalists and doubles main draw champions from each of the ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country will receive automatic bids into the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships. The 2022 ITA National Fall Championships will be held Nov. 2-6 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, California.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon (10th season) who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season during 2018, adding a third regular-season title in 2022. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 66 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including 2014, 2016, and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to an 99-73 overall record (.575) and 44-11 conference record (.800).

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 92 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 15 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 11 seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 45 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. In 2022, the men's golf team became the first program to earn at at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as four of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 26 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Spring 2022) saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher cumulative team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
