Men’s Tennis Drops Tight Battle to Kennesaw State

The Eagles picked up the doubles point, but were unable to sustain the early momentum.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team (4-5, 3-1 ASUN) competed until the very last point, but ultimately came out on the losing side of a 4-3 battle against Kennesaw State (5-10, 1-2 ASUN) on Friday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. With the result of the neutral site match, the Owls were able to even up this year's results between the teams at 1-1.

"This is a tough match to swallow," head coach CJ Weber said. "In all honesty, Kennesaw played great, fought hard, and deserved the win today. We were missing one small thing today, and that was just enough to crack the door open for Kennesaw to beat us. We will learn from it and hopefully we can grow and become better because of this loss."

Though the Owls were able to pick up the doubles match on the second court, the Eagles bounced back with strong performances at the first and third spots to claim the early advantage. The duo of redshirt-freshman Randy Wilson (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Miami Palmetto/Louisville) and freshman Eric Oncins (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) earned a 6-2 result at the third spot, leaving the point to be decided by the top court. Redshirt-freshman Magnus Johnson (Naples, Fla./Homeschool/UCF) and sophomore Max Damm (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) delivered, securing a 6-4 victory to hand FGCU a 1-0 edge.

Kennesaw State then picked up back-to-back singles wins at the second and third spots, taking a 2-1 lead, before Johnson was able to stop the scoring and tie things up with his 6-4, 6-2 result on court No. 1. Stefanacci's straight-set result on the sixth court put FGCU on the verge of clinching at 3-2, but the Owls' victories on courts five and four boosted them to the final 4-3 decision.

Both freshman Alessandro Conca (Milan, Italy/ISMC Milano) and senior Feliksas Sakalauskas (Palanga, Lithuania/Vilniaus Zveryno Gimnazija/Virginia Tech) had tight matches, as they took their respective Kennesaw State opponents into three sets.

With the result, the Owls were able to avenge the 1-6 loss they suffered at the hands of FGCU earlier this season (March 20). That victory was the 100th of Weber's career.

FGCU will continue its road swing tomorrow with a 3 p.m. match at Stetson. The Eagles defeated the Hatters 4-3 earlier this year, behind a clinching performance from Wilson in singles play.

The Eagles completed a perfect ASUN regular season in both 2015 and 2016, finishing with conference titles as well as a Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the 2017 ASUN Championship and made its second NCAA appearance. The Eagles returned to the mountaintop by claiming the 2019 regular season and tournament championships.
