Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Early Scoring Boosts Men’s Tennis Past Stetson

The Eagles never trailed the Hatters in their second win over the team this season.

DELAND, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team (5-5, 4-1 ASUN) completed its two-match road swing with a 5-2 victory over Stetson (2-7, 0-3 ASUN) on Saturday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Redshirt-freshman Guglielmo Stefanacci (Prato, Italy/International School of Florence) clinched the match for the Eagles at 4-0 with his 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 result at the fifth singles spot.

"Today was a great response to yesterday's loss," head coach CJ Weber said. "We did not compete perfectly, but it was really close. I'm proud of this team. We have the ability to be very tough in every position of the lineup in singles and doubles. I'm especially proud of Guglielmo. He clinched a really close match today and did it playing the way he needs to. I also want to give Randy and Eric a shoutout. They played together all weekend with virtually no practice beforehand, but they stepped up with the right attitude and played some incredible tennis both days. They led the team in attitude this weekend and that was a huge boost we needed. We will enjoy tomorrow off, but get back to work so we can continue to improve and accomplish our goals."

The Eagles got off to a good start by earning the doubles point for the second time in as many days. Though the Hatters picked up a 6-1 victory on the top court, the Eagles responded with a pair of wins at the third and second spots, respectively. Redshirt-freshman Randy Wilson (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Miami Palmetto/Louisville) and freshman Eric Oncins (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) set the table with a 6-3 victory on court three before the pair of redshirt-junior Juan Montes (Pereira, Colombia/Colegio Lujan) and Stefanacci clinched the early advantage by putting the finishing touches on a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

FGCU built upon its 1-0 lead in singles play, as redshirt-freshman Magnus Johnson (Naples, Fla./Homeschool/UCF) quickly tallied a straight-set win at the top spot. His triumph was followed by Montes' 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, which put the Eagles up 3-0 and on the edge of taking down Stetson.

Stefanacci then clinched the match for FGCU with his three-set victory at the fifth spot. After a slow second set, he rallied back and defeated Fabian Penzkofer to put the Eagles up 4-0.

Stetson responded to the win by securing two-consecutive points at the fourth and sixth spots. The points were the only two that the Hatters were able to collect, as redshirt-freshman Randy Wilson (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Miami Palmetto/Louisville) finalized the match with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 result on court three. Wilson's triumph boosted FGCU to its final 5-2 margin of victory, as well as its second win over the Hatters this season (4-3, March 27).

FGCU will now return home to close out its regular season with a match against UNF on Saturday, April 10. The contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time and will be preceded by a senior day ceremony that will see fifth-year student-athletes Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) and Feliksas Sakalauskas (Palanga, Lithuania/Vilniaus Zveryno Gimnazija/Virginia Tech) recognized. The match against the Ospreys will determine FGCU's seeding for the divsional playoffs. The first round will be played on Saturday, April 17 and will see No. 4 travel to No. 1 and No. 3 travel to No. 2. The winning teams will then to advance to the Final Four in Jacksonville.
