Men’s Golf Remains Third after Day Two of ASUN Championship

Eagles shoot 282 to match program’s lowest ASUN round in program history.

ATHENS, Fla. – Paced by a pair of 68s from senior Van Holmgren and sophomore Frankie Capan III, the FGCU men's golf team shot 282 on Monday to remain in the third place at the 2021 ASUN Championship Tournament at the University of Georgia Golf Course (Par 71, 7258 yards).

The 282 marked the Eagles' lowest round in program history for the ASUN Tournament and was the second lowest round of the day.

No. 13 Liberty continues to lead the field with a two-day score of 554 and a Monday score just one stroke ahead of FGCU. Jacksonville remains in second place (563), while the Green and Blue are just four strokes behind (567).

The Eagles will begin third round play on Tuesday at 10 AM with live scoring available through www.GolfStat.com.

Holmgren sits tied for third individually with a 36-hole total of 137 with Capan just three strokes behind in seventh place. Sophomore Jon Hopkins carded a 72 on Monday to move into 15th (145), while freshman Austin Cherichella shot 74 to tie for 18th (147). Junior Brady Madsen dropped into a tie for 32nd after shooting 81 in the second round (152).

"We had some struggles on the front nine of the course today, but I was proud of how the team fought through those and trusted themselves to turn in a terrific performance on the back side," said head coach Andrew Danna. "We'll work to put everything together tomorrow as we continue to compete."

Holmgren used four birdies on the back nine and 10 total holes at par-or-better to close the round to drop from one over at the turn to three under for the day. After sitting two over through hole No. 6, he carded an eagle on No. 7 to drop back to even before a bogey on No. 8 put him at 36 on the front side.

Capan was the only Eagle to go under on the front nine as he shot 33 before adding three birdies after the turn. He had bogeys on the final two holes giving him a 68 for the day.

A double bogey on No. 7 put Hopkins at three over before he closed the round with two birdies and 11 straight holes at par-or-better.

Cherichella offset two early bogeys with a pair of birdies on No. 10 and No. 17, but a double on No. 12 and a bogey at No. 18 kept him at three over.

Madsen ran into trouble on No. 2 with a triple bogey and went four over on No. 16 to finish 10 over on the day. He did convert birdies on No. 6 and No. 17 which offset two of his five bogeys.

The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
