Men’s Golf Takes Second at BMW Carolina Collegiate Invitational

Pierre Viallaneix leads FGCU as he ties for seventh overall; Eagles place five in top-20.

SPARTANBURG, S.C.Pierre Viallaneix (Apopka, Fla./Winter Park HS/Western Carolina) tied for seventh individually to pace the FGCU men's golf team to a second-place finish at the BMW Carolina Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The second-place finish marked the fifth time in the last six tournaments dating back to last spring that the Green and Blue placed second-or-better.
 
"I'm proud of how the team played today to move up a spot with a shot at winning the tournament," said head coach Andrew Danna. "It was another strong third round for us. We'll continue to focus on the process and are excited for our next opportunity to compete."
 
The Eagles made up eight shots on Tuesday as their 54-hole score of 847 put them 17 under par for the tournament. The 54-hole total was the seventh lowest in program history while the -17 versus par finish was the fifth-best.
 
High Point won the overall team title shooting 845 for the two days to finish two strokes ahead of FGCU. Tuesday's third round score of 280 for FGCU was the lowest of the day and the second lowest of the three rounds overall.
 
Viallaneix tied for seventh after shooting 70 on Tuesday for a three-round score of 212. Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) tied for 11th (213) highlighted by carding a 69 in the third round. Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) and Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) rounded out the scoring 215 to tie for 16th. Brady Madsen (Raymond, Minn./MacCray HS/Winona State) tied for 23rd after shooting 217 thanks to a two-under 70 on Tuesday.
 
Individually, Lucas Fallotico (Cernusco Sul Naviglo, Italy/Istituto Comprensivo Aldo Moro Seregno) tied for 13th (214), while Thomas Salanito (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic) tied for 33rd (219). With Fallotico's finish, FGCU placed five total players among the top-20.
 
The third round was highlighted by an eagle from Hopkins on No. 13 as part of his three-under performance. Viallaneix had a clean round with no bogeys and two birdies to finish the day at 70. Madsen closed out the day on a strong note going par-or-better on his final 10 holes including three straight birdies to end the round.  Cherichella also closed out the tournament well with three birdies on the back nine and was par-or-better on his final 10 holes as well.
 
As a team, FGCU finished the tournament with the most birdies overall (55) and the second most pars (172). Hopkins led the field with two eagles in the tournament, while Viallaneix led all players with 40 pars. Madsen led the Eagles with 14 birdies which was tied as the fourth-most among the 83 players.
 
FGCU will have two weeks off before heading to the Bahamas Invitational in Nassau on Friday, October 29 through Sunday, October 31.
