KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – FGCU men's golf freshman
Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) posted a four-under 68 on Monday afternoon to move into a tie for first place at the conclusion of the second round of the Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate hosted by Charleston Southern. That performance along with par finishes for
Van Holmgren (Plymouth, Minn./Waysata HS/North Dakota State) and
Michael O'Brien (West Chester, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller HS/Saint Joseph's) moved the Eagles into third overall heading into the Tuesday's final day of competition.
Â
The Eagles finished with a second-round score of 285 for a 36-round total of 570. Coastal Carolina and Kennesaw State are tied for first at 557 each. FGCU sits two strokes in front of Jacksonville State which has a two-day score of 572.
Â
"I thought our adjustments today helped in some parts of the round," said head coach
Andrew Danna. "I'm really excited at how the guys are playing as a group to be in a good spot headed into the final round. Tomorrow we will work to stay consistent, and if we can clean up a few other items, I'm hopeful for a really strong finish against a great field of competitors."
Â
Cherichella's score of 68 on Monday gave him a two-day total of 137 which is tied with Kennesaw State's Connor Coffee for the top individual spot. The low score of the day was a 66 from Tyler Gray of Coastal Carolina while two other players shot 68 for the second-lowest individual total.
Â
The freshman was par-or-better on every hold today with birdies on No. 1, No. 8, No. 12 and No. 15 to go four under.
Â
Holmgren finished the day at 72 after shooting 68 in Sunday's first round. The senior stands in a four-way tie for seventh. O'Brien moved up five spots in the individual standings with Monday's score of 72 – he used four birdies to help offset a double bogey on the eighth hole to stay even.
Â
Frankie Capan (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) cut four shots off his opening round total to finish Monday's round one over par at 73.
Â
The Eagles added 24 more birdies to bring their two-day total to 49 which still leads the 10-team field. Holmgren leads all individuals with 11, while Cherichella and O'Brien each have nine.
Â
The Eagles will tee off from hole one at 9:40 AM and 9:50 AM on Tuesday morning for the final round.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 82 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships, including three men's golfers. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (#24, 2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. In 2019-20, they ran their streak to three consecutive years leading both groups with the highest percentage of teams again receiving such high distinction (33% via 5 of 15 programs). FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
