FORT MYERS, Fla. – Some of the most iconic individuals associated with the FGCU Department of Athletics will join perhaps one of the most well-known basketball teams in NCAA history as the inaugural class of the FGCU Athletics Hall of Fame which has been announced today. Two of the most notable student-athletes in the department's 20-year history,
Chris Sale and
Brooke Youngquist Sweat, are joined by a trio of foundational forefathers in
Dr. Ben Hill Griffin III,
Dr. Bill Merwin, and
Duane Swanson, Sr., who each paved the way for the success the Eagles are currently enjoying. When the creation of the Athletics Hall of Fame was first announced last summer, it was unanimously decided that the 2012-13 FGCU men's basketball team, which put the University on the national map after becoming the first, and still only, No. 15 seed to reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, would be the first team and overall inductee into the class.
"This is a phenomenal collection of individuals whose efforts and talents have had generational impacts on FGCU Athletics," said Director of Athletics
Ken Kavanagh. "I greatly appreciate our Hall of Fame Committee for their efforts in determining this auspicious inaugural class. There is obviously no doubt that we would not be where we are today if not for the collective vision of Ben Hill Griffin III, Dr. Merwin, and Duane Swanson, Sr. Each believed in the positive impact that intercollegiate athletics could make on a young University. Brooke, Chris and the Dunk City team embody the finest examples of their vision and what it means to compete at the highest level for the Green & Blue."
As two of the most accomplished individual student-athletes in FGCU history, Sale and Youngquist Sweat continue to represent the Eagles at the highest level of their sport. A World Series Champion with the Boston Red Sox, Sale is a seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star. This marks the second time Sale has been part of an inaugural Hall of Fame class, as he was among the first honored by the ASUN Conference as well in 2015. Youngquist Sweat was also inducted into the ASUN Hall of Fame in 2018 and continues to be one of the top beach volleyball athletes representing Team USA in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and currently looking for a repeat experience in Tokyo this summer alongside partner Kerri Walsh Jennings.
The honors for Griffin, Merwin and Swanson all come posthumously, though their impact is still strongly felt on campus today. Griffin passed away earlier this year but is considered the father of Florida Gulf Coast University after his generous philanthropy and land donation literally set the foundation for the campus in Southwest Florida. What Griffin was for the University, the late President Merwin is considered for the Department of Athletics. Merwin's leadership and vision was key in FGCU's ascension to the NCAA Division I level and the success enjoyed with a current count of 82 conference championship titles and 38 NCAA tournament/championship appearances. Swanson, whom the FGCU baseball stadium is named after, was critical in making that complex along with the softball stadium, soccer facility and the Outdoor Sports Complex become reality – both through his own generous contributions and sharing that vision with others.
While these individuals all made FGCU Athletics a successful reality, it was perhaps the 2012-13 men's basketball team that elevated the University the most on the national stage. Earning their "Dunk City" moniker during the magical run through the NCAA Tournament, current USC head coach Andy Enfield's Eagles became a national storyline and to this day are still one of the most legendary postseason teams in collegiate history. From national television appearances to even winning an ESPY, that program's impact on the University was real as enrollment, exposure, and financial revenue all rose exponentially following that season.
"This is truly another historic marker in the journey of FGCU Athletics," said Kavanagh who is the chair of the Hall of Fame committee. "We are all extremely thankful for the significant contributions of this group and believe it is a fitting way to honor them in perpetuity."
Due to COVID-19, the official induction ceremony will be pushed back to either January or February of 2022 to facilitate an appropriate in-person event to celebrate this amazing group. Complete details will be released when they are formalized.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 82 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (No. 24, 2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their sport and have had the highest percentage of teams so honored from these two groups over each of the past three years. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
