FGCU Athletics announces mental health and wellness initiative

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics, in partnership with FGCU's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) department, announced that Dr. Jillian Konopa will provide dedicated time for FGCU's student-athletes.

Dr. Konopa is a clinician in FGCU's CAPS department and will spend part of her week housed in the Hartley Academic Resource Center (HARC), located in the Alico Arena complex.

"This represents another major step forward for the FGCU student-athlete experience," said FGCU Director of Athletics Brian Barrio. "A productive partnership between Athletics and CAPS will help us meet the expanding need for student-athlete mental wellness services. Thank you for this initiative goes to our partners at CAPS and to the resourceful staff here within FGCU Athletics.

"There are still many more ways that collaboration across campus can elevate the experience for our student-athletes, and we will be relentless as always, pursuing new opportunities to do so."

Student-athletes wishing to speak with Dr. Konopa can schedule an appointment with her at any time, but will now also have the flexibility of meeting her within the athletics complex. While student-athletes can schedule appointments with any CAPS clinician or provider, Dr. Konopa's time in the HARC will allow FGCU student-athletes to better facilitate appointments.

Dr. Konopa will also be available to FGCU coaches and staff to work with teams on topics such as group dynamics, relaxation strategies, mindfulness and imagery, performance anxiety and other mental health and performance-related topics.

Wednesday's announcement comes as FGCU Athletics announced a partnership with Chartwells to provide supplemental nutritional support for student-athletes on Tuesday.
