ATLANTA - The FGCU women's basketball program placed nine student-athletes on the ASUN's all-decade team that was released this afternoon -
Tytionia Adderly, Kaneisha Atwater, China Dow, Stephanie Haas, Sarah Hansen, Keri Jewett-Giles, Rosemarie Julien, Whitney Knight and Nasrin Ulel.
Over the past 10 seasons, FGCU has compiled a 289-53 (.845) overall record, including a 154-8 record in ASUN play. The Eagles registered four 30-win campaigns and notched five undefeated regular seasons in conference play while capturing 15 combined ASUN regular season and conference tournament championships. Furthermore, the group of nine has helped the Green and Blue win NCAA Tournament games in 2015 and 2018.
The nine individuals captured six of the decade's ASUN player of the year awards with Knight (2015 and 2016) and Hansen (2013 and 2014) each capturing two, while Ulel (2019) and Jewett-Giles (2020) nabbed one apiece. Adderly, who finished her career as the best rebounder in program history this past March, has captured the past two ASUN defensive player of the year honors, while Jewett-Giles (2019), Dow (2017 and 2018), Knight (2015) and Hansen (2012) were named ASUN tournament MVP. In fact, Dow was the only two-time tournament MVP of the decade. Julien was the 2017 ASUN newcomer of the year. Academically, Hansen captured three ASUN scholar-athlete of the year awards, while Haas was a back-to-back winner in 2015 and 2016 before Jewett-Giles won it in 2020. Meanwhile, head coach
Karl Smesko has been named the ASUN's top coach nine of the past 10 seasons.
"We have been fortunate to coach so many great players the past 10 seasons," Smesko said. "It is great to see so many of them recognized. We have enjoyed a lot of success during this time. In addition to the players recognized, we have had many other great players and excellent assistant coaches who have helped our program be consistently successful."
Tytionia Adderly (2016-20) | G/F | Jupiter, Fla.
Adderly finished her record-shattering career just this past March as the only player in ASUN history with at least 800 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 steals in a career. The program's all-time leading rebounder pulled down 1,185 caroms in her career, which also ranks her second in ASUN history. She is one of two players in program history to rank among the top five in career rebounds, assists and steals along with Courtney Chihil, and she became the conference's first-ever back-to-back defensive player of the year as a senior. Overall, she tallied 14 double-doubles, 55 games with 10+ rebounds and has 18 of FGCU's 24 best single-game rebound totals. In the postseason, she notched 10+ rebounds in 11 career ASUN tournament games and led the Eagles to three NCAA Tournament berths.
Kaneisha Atwater (2013-16) | G | Fort Pierce, Fla.
Atwater concluded an historic three-year career in the Green and Blue in 2016 as a two-time First Team All-ASUN selection. She was also a three-time selection to the ASUN all-tournament team and a four-time conference player of the week, which is the fourth-best total in program history. In her NCAA career, which started at VCU, she produced 1,498 points, and she registered 1,312 of those in the Green and Blue. Her 26-point effort against Oklahoma State on March 21, 2015 was not only instrumental in leading FGCU to its first-ever Division I NCAA Tournament win, but it still ranks as the most points by an Eagle in an NCAA Tournament game. To this day, she also ranks among the top 10 in program's D-I era in total points, scoring average, field goals made, field goal percentage, rebounds, assists, steals and games started.
China Dow (2016-18) | G | Louisville, Ky.
Dow concluded one of the most clutch careers in program history in 2018. The two-time ASUN tournament MVP finished her Division-I career with 1,093 points, including 749 in just two seasons in the Green and Blue. She came up clutch in the biggest moments, registering a pair of 30-point performances in the ASUN tournament while averaging 10.3 points of six such games. On top of that, she averaged 18 points over three NCAA Tournament games, notching a pair of 20-point performances in 2018, the first of which helped the Eagles knock off fifth-seeded Missouri in the first round. She also buried six 3-pointers in the second round vs Stanford.
Stephanie Haas (2012-16) | G | Avon Lake, Ohio
Although she was never an all-conference selection during her time at FGCU, Haas scored 1,138 points in her four-year career and was a two-time ASUN scholar-athlete of the year in 2015 and 2016. She was also named the conference's player of the week on March 9, 2014. As a senior, she helped lead the Eagles to an upset of Michigan in the WNIT semifinals with a 20-point performance on 7-for-9 shooting. In fact, she tallied double-figure scoring efforts in four of her final five collegiate contests, helping lead FGCU to a WNIT runner-up finish in 2016. Prior to that, Haas helped lead FGCU to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances and an initial WNIT run as a freshman.
Sarah Hansen (2009-14) | G | McKean, Penn.
The program's all-time scoring leader with 1,901 career points, Hansen is the most decorated player in FGCU's history. She was twice named the ASUN's player of the year and nabbed one conference tournament MVP honor while being named to the all-tournament squad three times. After being named to the ASUN's all-freshmen team, the guard went on to become FGCU's only four-time all-conference selection, and she was named to the first-team three times. On top of that, she was a five-time ASUN player of the week and a three-time newcomer of the week. Hansen led FGCU to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program's first-ever at the Division I level in 2012. To this day, she holds the program's career records for points, field goals made, field goals attempted, free throws made, steals, games started and minutes played.
Keri Jewett-Giles (2018-20) | G | Fort Myers, Fla.
Jewett-Giles concluded her collegiate career with a season for the record book as she not only captured ASUN player and scholar-athlete of the year recognition but was named a WBCA Honorable Mention All-American. In her two seasons donning the Green and Blue, the guard was a six-time ASUN player of the week and a two-time ASUN newcomer of the week. She finished with 1,464 points, 414 assists and 261 steals over 128 career games, including 957 points, 218 assists and 135 steals in 65 games at FGCU. She reached 1,000 career points vs Saint Francis (11/22/19) during her senior season and finished as the highest scoring two-year transfer in program history. She broke FGCU's Division I era career scoring average record at 14.7 per contest.
Rosemarie Julien (2016-18) | G | Port St. Lucie, Fla.
In her two seasons at FGCU, Julien led the team in scoring twice while registering 862 points over 71 career games after transferring in from Chipola College. She was a two-time First Team All-ASUN selection, including a unanimous choice in 2018. The 2017 conference newcomer of the year also landed a spot on the all-tournament team in 2018 after scoring 19 points in the championship game win over Jacksonville. She graduated with four career ASUN player of the week selections and three newcomer of the week awards, and she led the Eagles to NCAA Tournament appearances in both of her seasons, where she scored 12 points in FGCU's upset of fifth-seeded Missouri in the first round as a senior.
Whitney Knight (2011-16) | G | Winston-Salem, N.C.
Knight, who became the first Eagle to be drafted in the WNBA when the Los Angeles Sparks selected her 15th overall in 2016, was chosen as an AP Honorable Mention All-American as a senior. She is one of just two three-time First Team All-ASUN selections in program history along with Hansen and was the back-to-back ASUN player of the year in 2015 and 2016. Additionally, she was named the ASUN tournament MVP in 2015 and landed a spot on the all-tournament team in 2016. She was named to the conference's all-freshmen team in 2012. A one-time newcomer of the week, Knight still holds the program record for most ASUN player of the week selections with seven. She finished her career with 1,574 points, 735 rebounds, 333 blocks, 245 assists and 206 steals. In fact, while she still has almost three times as many blocks as anyone else in FGCU annals, she also ranks second in program history in points, field goals made and field goals attempted.
Nasrin Ulel (2016-20) | G | Murrieta, Calif.
Ulel rose from a seldom-used bench player as a freshman to ASUN player of the year as a junior. She finished her career as a two-time all-conference selection while totaling 1,356 points over 128 career games, which is the fourth-most in a career in program history. Her 229 career-3 point field goals made is 10th-most in ASUN history and also fourth-best among all-time Eagles. She became the 11th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points in a win over No. 20 USF during her senior year and helped lead the Eagles to three NCAA Tournament berths.
