Jalen Warren Named ASUN Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week

Junior guard averaged 19 points, scored game-winner, to lead FGCU over the weekend.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - After a strong individual weekend where he averaged 19 points and scored the game-winner at Jacksonville, FGCU junior guard Jalen Warren (Milton, Ontario) has been named the ASUN Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week.

In the split weekend on the road at Jacksonville and Liberty, along with his 19 point average, Warren added two rebounds and an assist in both games. The junior hit the game-winner with six seconds remaining against the Dolphins as part of an 18 point effort – 12 of which he scored in the second half helping the Eagles to the win. In that game, he shot 7-of-15 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from deep, and added three rebounds and two assists. He followed that with a game-high 20-point night at Liberty where he shot 8-of-12 from the floor and went 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Overall for the weekend, he was 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the floor, 2-of-4 (50%) from deep and 6-of-7 from the free throw line in an average of 28.5 minutes per game. Warren's 19-point average for the two games was twice his season scoring average entering the weekend (9.5 pts/game), while his 55.6 shooting percentage was 12 points higher than his average (43.3 percent). His 20-point effort at Liberty was one shy of his career high, while the two games marked the fourth and fifth time this season he surpassed 15-or-more points in a game.

"I think this weekend was an indication of what we've known Jalen could do from a scoring standpoint," said head coach Michael Fly. "He has the ability to attack the rim and really took advantage of the scouting report going into both games."

Warren's career-high with FGCU was 21 in the overtime win against FAU on Nov. 21 where he also scored the game-winning basket. That play was the No. 1 Play of the Day on ESPN's SportsCenter highlighting the Eagles' come-from-behind win at home.

For the season, Warren is FGCU's third-leading scorer with 10.3 points per game. In league games, he is now averaging 12.3 points per night which ranks him second on the squad. His 82 assists this year leads the Eagles and ranks second overall in the ASUN.

FGCU will return to action with a pair of home games this week at Alico Arena as Stetson visits on Thursday, Feb. 6, followed by UNF on Saturday, Feb. 8. Both games are slated for 7 PM tips and will be streamed live on ESPN+ and broadcast on Fox Sports Radio as well. With both teams ahead of FGCU (t-6th) in the ASUN standings (UNF, t-1st; Stetson, 3rd), a pair of wins could move the Eagles as high as third.
