Lyles elevated to associate head coach for @FGCU_WBB program

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Chelsea Lyles has been promoted to associate head coach of the FGCU women's basketball program, head coach Karl Smesko announced today. She will replace Chelsea Banbury, who recently left the program to become head coach of the High Point women's program.

"Coach Lyles has done a great job for our program for many years," Smesko said. "She is an outstanding coach who is ready and prepared to be a successful head coach. We are fortunate to have someone as experienced and talented as her as our associate head coach."

Lyles recently completed her fifth season as the program's recruiting coordinator. In that time, she has helped the Eagles land players such as Rosemarie Julien, Tytionia Adderly, Nasrin Ulel, Tyra Cox, Erica Nelson and Davion Wingate.

Those recruiting efforts have translated into a 149-25 record on the court, which gives the Eagles the eighth-most wins among any Division-I program over the past five years, including at least 10 more than any other mid-major program across the nation. The program has recorded a combined eight ASUN regular season and tournament championships, four NCAA tournament appearances (including two wins) and a WNIT runner-up finish since then, and they're one of only seven Division-I programs with at least three 30 win seasons over the past five campaigns.

"I really appreciate Coach Smesko for giving me this opportunity," Lyles said. "He has always seen potential in me - as a player and now as a coach. I am so grateful that I get to elevate my career at such an amazing place like FGCU. The relationships that I have developed at this wonderful university have been life changing, and I'm so appreciative to coach for that."

After a one-year stint as a student assistant, Lyles officially joined the staff as an assistant coach in 2011 and served in that role until being named the recruiting coordinator in the summer of 2014. During that three-year era, she helped lead the team to a 72-18 record, including an astounding 53-1 record in ASUN play.

In all, as either a player or coach within the program, Lyles has played a large role in a 309-62 record, leading the team to 15 of 19 possible combined ASUN regular season and tournament championships, six NCAA tournament appearances and five WNIT appearances.
