@FGCU_Softball Starts Conference Play at Defending ASUN Champion Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – The FGCU softball team (14-12) will start its conference slate on the road with a three-game series against the reigning ASUN regular season and tournament champion Kennesaw State, Saturday through Sunday at Bailey Park.

Last Time Out
The Eagles are coming off a 6-0 win over Columbia at home, posting crooked numbers in the first and fourth inning to pull away from the Lions Tuesday evening. In the circle, senior pitcher Riley Randolph (St. Petersburg, FL./Northeast HS) moved to 11-5 overall after tossing five innings, scattering three hits while fanning six batters. At the plate, freshman Reedy Davenport (St. Johns, FL./Bartram Trail HS) led the way going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The Green and Blue
On offense senior Kate Kelly (Cape Coral, FL./Seminole State College) leads the team in hitting (.353) and is a threat on the bases going 13-for-14 in stolen base attempts. Davenport leads the team in RBI (19) while holding a .306 BA. Senior Racquel Fournet (Windermere, FL./Windermere Preparatory School) is the Eagles' third .300 plus hitter, owning a .333 BA – second on the team.

In the circle, Randolph leads the bunch with 11 wins in 15 starts along with a 0.70 ERA (fifth in the nation), holding opposing batters to a .170 BA. The pitching staff as a whole has combined to post a 1.81 ERA (19th in the nation). 

ASUN Preseason Poll
The Eagles collected 56 points along with two first-place votes. Conference newcomer Liberty sat atop the poll with 61 points and five first-place votes while Kennesaw State was picked third with 47 points, taking the final first-place vote.

Lipscomb (44) was slotted fourth as UNF (24), Jacksonville (22), North Alabama (20), the ASUN's second newcomer team this year, and Stetson (14) rounded out the eight teams.
 
200 Club
Fournet registered her 200th career hit at FGCU (one of seven players in program history) last Sunday against NDSU. In the process, she is now the only player with the Green and Blue to record 200 hits and 50 doubles (54).

Scouting the Owls
KSU enters the weekend series with a 17-14 mark, going 2-1 in ASUN play after last weekend's series against Liberty. Senior Maddie Roth leads the Owls in hitting with a .368 clip as sophomore Alexa Solorzano holds a pair of team-best marks in RBI (21) and home runs (eight).

In the circle, KSU has utilized four pitchers this season with senior Hailey Andrews proving to be the No. 1 as she is 9-7 with a 2.39 ERA in 96.2 innings. Junior Abby Deane has two of the Owls' three saves in 2019.  

FGCU leads the all-time series 21-12. Their last meeting came in the 2018 ASUN Championship where the Eagles fell 4-2 to the Owls in the seventh inning.

COACH DEIROS
The founding father of FGCU softball, David Deiros is in his 17th season as head coach. Hired in 2001 to build the program from the dirt up, Deiros has since guided the Eagles to a 624-326-3 (.657), going 139-84 (.623) in the ASUN, having 13 seasons with a winning record, and nine campaigns with 35 wins. Deiros is a former head coach at the 1998 Florida State Runner-up Lely High School in Naples and is the founding head coach of the 1999 District Champion/2001 Regional Runner-up Gulf Coast High School in Naples.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 75 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 11+ seasons at the Division-I level. Additionally, in just seven+ seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 35 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including both men's and women's soccer again in 2018. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best 6th-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the Spring, 2018 and had an ASUN Conference and State of Florida best five teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport.  The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours – being recognized as one of two runner-ups for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
