LA QUINTA, Calif. – For the second-straight day,
Grant Renegar led the FGCU men's golf team as he finished in the top 5 overall and the Eagles wrapped up their regular season with an 8th-place finish at Loyola Marymount's Geiberger Invitational Tuesday.
Â
Renegar (McComb, Miss./Meridian CC/Parklane Academy) tied for 5th out of 70 golfers as the senior shot a final-round 1-over 73 at the 7,204-yard PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course. He posted a 213 (-3) total overall to finish four strokes behind medalist Alex Lee from Fresno State (209, -7).
Â
As a team, FGCU – competing on the West Coast for the first time since the fall of 2014 – posted its third sub-300 round of the 54-hole event with a 294 in the final round, but couldn't move up from its overnight position on the 12-team leaderboard. The Green and Blue totaled an 879 (+15) over the three rounds, finishing three shots back of San Diego (876, +12). Top-50 nationally-ranked BYU and Santa Clara tied for the team championship with 856 totals (-8).
Â
In addition to Renegar's final-round 73,
Andrew Potter and
Michael Keymont also both signed for 73s on Tuesday as
Potter (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) posted a 221 total and
Keymont (Orlando, Fla./Eastern Florida State College/Timber Creek) finished with a 226. Sandwiched in-between those two was
Cole Castro (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) with a 222 total following a final-round 75.
Doug Smith (Windermere, Fla./Olympia HS) rounded out the Eagles' scoring with a final-round 76 as part of a 231 total.
Â
"We had some good reflection after today's round to remind us of the importance of playing the game and not trying to force a result," said FGCU head coach
Eric Booker, whose team made four double bogeys or worse in the final round after making 10 such scores over the first two rounds combined. "The proper mental mindset is the need for a quiet, but confident, approach to each shot. This will be something we'll be focusing on as we prepare for the ASUN Championship."
Â
This was FGCU's final competitive tune-up before the ASUN Championship, and despite the disappointing finish the Eagles still posted four top-4 finishes or better this spring, including a 1st-place showing in their home event and a tie for 1st (lost in a one-hole playoff) at Stetson's Legacy Intercollegiate.
Â
FGCU will now turn its focus to the ASUN Championship Apr. 22-24 at The Legends at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
