BOCA RATON, Fla. – Looking to build momentum following the first win of the season, the FGCU men's tennis team plays both on the road and at home this weekend. The Eagles (1-4) first venture to Boca Raton to meet FAU Saturday afternoon before meeting Florida A&M Sunday at noon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
FGCU's first match of the weekend is set for 1 p.m. Saturday in Boca Raton against FAU. The Eagles then return home to face FAMU Sunday at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles earned their first victory of the season in emphatic fashion, claiming eight of the nine total matches for a 7-0 final.
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) won both his doubles and singles match, setting the tone for a dominant evening for the Green and Blue.
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida),
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School), and
Felipe Escobar (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira/TCU) also won both of their matches to complete the victory.
SCOUTING THE OWLS
FAU enters the weekend 4-2 with wins over Yale, Santa Clara, Florida A&M, and Furman. Both Thomas Buggeaud and Gabriel Sidney have tallied four victories this season to lead FAU, with all those victories coming from spots four through six in the lineup. At the top spot, Remi Chancerel and Jason Legall have split time, each posting a victory.
In doubles, the pairing of Igancio Garcia and Arthur Stefani are 3-0 at No. 2 while Chancerel and Sidney are 2-2 at No. 1.
FGCU trails the all-time series 4-6 but the Eagles have won four of the last five matches. Last season, FAU ended FGCU's 15-match home winning streak, defeating FGCU 4-0.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
Florida A&M comes to Fort Myers with an 0-4 record following a loss to College of Charleston. The Rattlers are led by Nourelidin Adam and Adam Yaha, who both have victories at No. 2 singles. Florida A&M, however, has struggled this season, recording only three singles wins thus far.
The Rattlers' woes continue in doubles with a 1-6 combined record in dual play.
FGCU has won four-straight meetings against the Rattlers to take a 5-4 lead in the all-time series.
CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by
CJ Weber who has coached 26 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his sixth year, Weber has compiled a 75-60 (.552) overall record and a 29-14 (.694) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed consecutive perfect ASUN seasons in 2016 and back-to-back conference titles as well as a second-straight Coach of the Year honor for Weber.
