Potter Paces @FGCU_MGolf; Eagles In 2nd At Stetson’s Legacy Intercollegiate

LONGWOOD, Fla. – Led by Andrew Potter, the FGCU men's golf team continued its strong play on Monday as the Eagles sit alone in 2nd place and just three shots out of 1st after the opening two rounds of Stetson's Legacy Intercollegiate at The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes.

Potter (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) shot a 1st-round 73, but fired a 4-under 68 in his second 18 of the day to sit alone in 4th place, just three shots behind tournament leaders Daniel Brennan and Cooper Collins from Bethune-Cookman and Morehead State, respectively.

The junior helped the Eagles to an opening-round 293 (+5), and they turned in an even better performance in the 2nd round with a 287 (-1) showing – representing the lowest afternoon score of the nine competing teams – to produce a 580 total.

Bethune-Cookman leads the event with a 577 total, and the Eagles – who are coming off a win in their most recent home event two weeks ago – are three shots clear of 3rd-place Morehead State (583) and 11 clear of host and fellow ASUN member Stetson (591).

"We had a slow start to the day and stayed patient until good things started to happen," stated FGCU head coach Eric Booker. "The whole team did a good job with maintaining their composure and playing mindset today.

"Andrew really settled into his game during the 2nd round, and he is in position to make some noise tomorrow," Booker added. "The guys are hitting the ball well, and if some extra putts drop tomorrow we can certainly come away with the win."

Potter's 68 is his second-lowest career round, bested only by a 66 as a freshman. As part of the 4-under performance, he made six birdies against only a pair of bogeys.

In addition to Potter's strong play, freshman Cole Castro (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) signed for rounds of 74 and 71 – with the 2nd-round 1-under performance representing Castro's second sub-par round in his last three. With his 145 (+1) total, Castro is tied for 9th entering the final round.

Michael Keymont (Orlando, Fla./Eastern Florida State College/Timber Creek) and Doug Smith (Windermere, Fla./Olympia HS) are both tied for 22nd after rounds of 73 and 75 for Keymont and 75 and 73 for Smith. Grant Renegar (McComb, Miss./Meridian CC/Parklane Academy) rounded out the Green and Blue scoring for the day with rounds of 77 and 73.

Final-round play will get underway on Tuesday with tee times off the 1st hole beginning at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat by clicking here.
