FORT MYERS, Fla. – Winners of both of its prior home duals, the FGCU men's tennis team remains at home to play host to UT-Arlington Friday at 5 p.m.
Admission to all home matches remains free. Fans are encouraged to bring their own seating, as bleacher seating is limited.
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles won their second home match in as many tries with a 6-1 victory over Florida A&M. FGCU made quick work of the Rattlers, securing the match victory within two hours to move to 2-5 overall this season.Â
FGCU won doubles match at No. 1 and No. 3 and led at No. 2 to lead 1-0 heading into singles. From there, the Green and Blue received wins from
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS),
Felipe Escobar (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira/TCU), and
Mateo Ruiz (Bucaramanga, Colombia/Oklahoma State) to seal the win.
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) and
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) also earned singles wins for FGCU. Â
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
UT-Arlington enters Friday with a 6-2 record. The Mavericks boast winning records at five of the six singles positions, including a 7-1 record at No. 3 and 6-1 marks at No. 1, and No. 2. Led by Guanarteme Nuez and Enrique Prado lead the way at the top two positions, while Mauricio Del Rio has solidified the No. 3 spot.
In doubles, The Mavericks remain strong with winning records at all three spots in the lineup. The pairing on Nuez and Del Rio have posted three wins in four tries at No. 1, while Abhishek Bosola and Nuez are also 3-1 at No. 2.
The Eagles won the only prior meeting between the two programs in 2016. FGCU won a closely-contested 4-3 match in Orlando with
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) earning a win.
CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by
CJ Weber who has coached 26 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his sixth year, Weber has compiled a 76-61 (.552) overall record and a 29-14 (.694) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed consecutive perfect ASUN seasons in 2016 and back-to-back conference titles as well as a second-straight Coach of the Year honor for Weber.
