Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Luck did not go the way of the FGCU men's tennis team Saturday as the Eagles fell 5-2 to FAU. The Eagles (1-5) claimed the doubles point but fell behind in singles only for an injury to prevent any chance of a comeback against the Owls (5-2).
"Today was another really hard-fought match," said head coach
CJ Weber. "We did a great job jumping on them in doubles especially when they just beat Georgia two days ago. FAU responded well and did what they needed to do in singles. We continue to get tested early in the season but I'm still very confident in this team."
Trailing 3-1 but with chances to extend the match with performances at No. 1 and No. 4, FGCU's
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) was unable to continue his match after splitting the first two sets. Following the retirement,
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) defeated Jason Legall 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 1 and
Felipe Escobar (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira/TCU) fell 7-6, 7-6 at No. 4 to Gabriel Sidney.
FGCU's day started off strong with a pair of doubles victories. Escobar and
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) secured a 6-4 win over Ignacio Garcia and Arthur Stefani. While Ramirez and Landert were trailing 5-4 to Remi Chancerel and Sidney,
Mateo Ruiz (Bucaramanga, Colombia/Oklahoma State) and
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) took down Legall and Thomas Guy by the same 6-4 scoreline to secure the doubles point. Â
With the lead, FAU stormed back with victories at No. 2, 6 and 5 before the injury.
Ezequiel Cerrini (Sunny Isles Beach, Fla./Homeschool) dropped his match at No. 2 to Chancerel 6-1, 6-4 while Fernandez fell 6-4, 6-3 to Stefani.
At No. 5, Ruiz lost 6-4, 6-2 to Thomas Bugeaud in the match just before Landert's.
FGCU faces a quick turnaround with a match tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against Florida A&M.
