No. 25 @FGCU_WBB Falls To North Florida, Will Face JU On Saturday For First Place

Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The No. 25 FGCU women's basketball team (20-4, 6-1 ASUN) dropped a 75-73 decision on the road to North Florida on the road Thursday.

The Eagles, who were without the services of Tytionia Adderly, will now face Jacksonville (16-6, 6-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a chance to move back into sole possession of first place in the conference.

"UNF played a fantastic game," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "We couldn't guard their posts and when we tried to help, they knocked down threes."

The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for FGCU, who also had won 17 straight against UNF dating back to Dec. 2, 2010. It was the 10th game all-time as a ranked team for the Eagles, who are now 8-2 in those matchups.

As a team, UNF shot 8-for-11 from 3-point range and made 13 of 20 free throw attempts. Meanwhile, the Eagles finished 8-for-26 from 3-point range and 11 of 14 from the foul line.

Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS), who is the program's all-time leader in rebounds per game in the Division-I era, sat out due to injury. It was the first game the sophomore has missed in her career.

Rosemarie Julien, who hit a 3-pointer with just under 10 seconds left to pull the Eagles within two, was a steady force for her team. The senior finished with a team-high 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting while adding three rebounds.

Erica Nelson also produced offensively as the senior guard tallied 16 points, six assists and three steals. She finished 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Taylor Gradinjan and China Dow each added nine points, while Nasrin Ulel (Murrietta, Calif./Murrietta HS) had five points, six rebounds and two assists.

Lisa Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) and Jessica Cattani (Muskego, Wis./Muskego HS) each had three assists as FGCU had 17 total on 27 field goals as a team.

NOTES

Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS) now has 1,124 career points, which is 12 shy of eclipsing Stephanie Haas (1,135, 2012-16) for seventh most all-time. Her three field goals made moved her past Kelsey Jacobson (385, 2008-12) for seventh most all-time. With her game played, she passed Katie Meador (135, 2012-16) for third most games played in program history, and she is five starts shy of passing Adrianne McNally (118, 2006-10) for second most.

Three players eclipsed or moved closer to career scoring milestones in the loss. Julien (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast HS) moved past 700 points with her big game and now has 703. Nelson (Kansas City, Mo./Lee Summit North HS) now has 511 career points, and with her nine points, Dow (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) is now four points shy of 900 in her NCAA career, which began at Middle Tennessee.

FGCU is now 21-3 all-time against North Florida.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko rallied the 2016-17 Eagles to their seventh-straight 25-win campaign, which culminated in the team's fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons of eligibility. The seven-time ASUN Coach of the Year was named the espnW Mid-Major Coach of the Year in 2015-16 following a run that witnessed the Eagles finish a best-ever 33-6. Over a five-year stretch starting in 2011-12, FGCU racked up four ASUN seasons with a perfect record and capped the run with back-to-back 30 plus win seasons. In 2014-15, the team earned its first top-25 ranking and another NCAA Tournament trip as a seven seed, where FGCU won its first ever NCAA Division-I Tournament game against No. 10 Oklahoma State. Including this year, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons. He maintains a record of 424-86 (.831) at FGCU, including a 163-16 (.911) mark in ASUN play. Over the past six + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 99-4 (.961) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. He holds a career head coaching record of 485-113 (.811). Smesko ranks among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group.
