Four Notch Double-Figures, @FGCU_WBB Reaches Century Mark In Rout of FIU

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women's basketball team (2-1) won its second-straight with a 100-58 rout of Florida International (0-4) in Alico Arena Friday.

The result was the program's 16th all-time in triple digits, including the 11th in Alico Arena history and the eighth of the Division-I era. The Eagles shot 37-for-68 (.544) from the field, which is tied for the seventh-most field goals made in the Division-I era and the 10th-best percentage in Alico Arena history by a team donning the Green and Blue.

"I liked the intensity and the pace we played with," FGCU head coach Karl Smesko said. "We're incorporating a lot of new players, and we're a team that likes to be precise in what we do, and this has taken some time. I thought we took a good step forward today. So many people contributed in a positive way, which was good to see. In the first half, it was a close game and we started knocking down a bunch of threes in a row. That put us in the lead, and I thought we played more relaxed and comfortable after that."

Four players reached double figures for FGCU, including Keri Jewett-Giles (18), Chandler Ryan (12), Nasrin Ulel (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta HS) (11) and Tanner Bryant (11), while six others scored at least five points. Samantha Streeter (Melbourne, Fla./Eau Gallie HS), who was a team manager last year, came off the bench to score her first collegiate points in the final two minutes to give FGCU its 99th and 100th points.

Florida International led 10-6 just over four minutes into the opening quarter, but FGCU closed on a 18-2 run, including 14 points over the final three minutes. After TaMiracle Taylor opened the second frame with a 3-pointer for FIU, the Eagles scored 13 of the next 15 points, capped by a layup from Lisa Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) to push the lead to 20 with 5:33 left in the half.

The Green and Blue then poured in five 3-pointers over the final four minutes, and Destiny Wahington-Mabon caromed a layup on the right side of the rim into the hoop for a 58-28 lead at the half.

Jewett-Giles (Fort Myers, Fla./Dunbar HS) converted a layup with 3:57 in the third to push the margin to 40 for the first time, and the Eagles led by as many as 44 twice late in the fourth, the first of which came on four consecutive 3-pointers from the combination of Tyra Cox, Bryant (Washington Court House, Ohio/Miami Trace HS) and Ryan (Groveland, Ill./Morton HS).

Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS), who tied Washington-Mabon (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North HS) for the team-high in rebounds with seven, added three assists and three steals. She is now tied with Adrianne McNally (2006-10) for the third-most rebounds in Alico Arena history with 339, and she eclipsed 100 steals in her career, moving into 11th in the program's Division-I era for a career. Furthermore, she became just the 20th player in the Division-I era to play 70 games in the Green and Blue and needs 15 rebounds to 600 in her career.

Alyssa Blair (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie HS), who earned her first career start against FIU, tallied nine points and a team-high four steals on 3-for-5 shooting in just 13 minutes. Ryan now has three consecutive games with at least 12 points and four 3-point field goals to open the season. She finished 4-for-7 from 3-point range and led the team in assists with four.

NOTES
A total of 12 players reached the scoring column for FGCU, which is just one shy of the program record of 13 set on Nov. 18, 2006 against Puerto Rico Rio Piedras…all 14 players who saw action for FGCU had at least one rebound…Jewett-Giles is averaging 16.5 points over the past two games…Washington-Mabon, a graduate transfer from Ball State, finished with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting and two blocks in addition to her seven boards…Bryant produced her second consecutive game in double figures just three games into her collegiate career.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko led the 2017-18 Eagles to another historic season. The Green and Blue finished 31-5 overall and 13-1 in ASUN play, capturing the program's eighth ASUN regular season championship and fifth ASUN tournament championship. The team finished the season ranked 25th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, recaptured the NCAA record for most 3-point field goals made in a season with 431 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in seven seasons, where the Eagles knocked off 5th-seeded and No. 15 ranked Missouri in the opening round. It was the team's second tournament win over the past three appearances. Over the course of the season, FGCU knocked off three ranked teams - No. 15 Missouri, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 DePaul.

Over the past four seasons, Smesko has guided FGCU to three 30 plus win seasons while recording a 121-23 (.840) record overall. The now eight-time ASUN Coach of the Year rallied the 2016-17 team to its seventh straight 25-win campaign, culminating in an ASUN tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2015-16, he was named the espnW mid-major coach of the year following a run that witnessed the Eagles claim a WNIT runner-up finish and a Division-I program best ever 33-6 record. In 2014-15, the team achieved its first-ever top-25 ranking and made another trip to the NCAA Tournament, where the Eagles earned a No. 7 seed and won the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game, toppling No. 10 seed Oklahoma State.

Including the 2017-18 campaign, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons and eight-straight 25-win seasons. He maintains a record of 498-115 (.812) overall in his career, including a 170-16 (.914) mark in ASUN play. Over the past seven seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 106-4 (.964) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. Entering 2016-17, he ranked among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group. Over the past year, first-year NCAA Division-I head coaches Nancy Fahey (Illinois) and Bart Brooks (Belmont) pushed the list to six.
