Rick, Gilmore Named @FGCUEagles Scholar-Athletes of the Month

FORT MYERS, FL – The FGCU Department of Athletics has announced its monthly academic honorees for October. Volleyball senior Maggie Rick along with baseball redshirt junior Kohl Gilmore were named Scholar-Athletes of the Month.

A female and male Eagle is chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for this honor is based on a combination of significant athletic and overall academic success.

Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) boasts a 3.89 GPA and is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Economics with a minor in Management. The senior has made the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List each semester as an Eagle while landing a spot on the President's List the previous fall and spring terms. Wednesday evening, Rick was named ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year as she became the first four-time all-conference and three-time all-academic team selection in program history.

On top of being the program's all-time assist leader, Rick has 20 career double-doubles, including 10 this year alone and is one of just two players in program history with at least 1,000 assists and 800 digs in a career.

"What Maggie has been able to do in balancing the time commitments of her season with the academic rigors of her final year has been remarkable," said head coach Matt Botsford. "She hasn't skipped a beat in either area and continues to display the type of focus and management skills necessary to succeed at both."

Gilmore (Fort Pierce, Fla/Indian River State/John Carroll HS) is a Communications major and currently holds a 3.61 GPA. The Fort Pierce native has landed a spot on the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll the past fall and spring semesters.

This past summer, he batted .386, hitting eight doubles with 13 RBI as a member of the Diamond Ducks. During the two months of summer ball, he earned a mid-season All-Star nod as well as postseason All-League honors. The John Carroll HS product will look to continue his success this upcoming spring after being named an ASUN Second Team member last season after starting all 53 games, ending the year with a .282/.399/.422 slash line.

"Kohl is a great ambassador for our program, he is committed to being an all-around great person and just not an athlete," said head baseball coach Dave Tollett. "Kohl is a people person, he directs a bible study for student-athletes and is involved in over five different community service projects and he loves helping children with special needs. This is a well-deserving award to a young man that represents this University and his family in such a positive light on a daily basis."
