RICHMOND, Ky. – The FGCU men's golf team concluded its season-opening EKU Intercollegiate in 13th place at the University Club at Arlington on Sunday.
Â
Redshirt junior
Robert Renner Jr. led the Eagles as he finished in a tie for 12th place overall with three consistent rounds of 70-71-71 to finish just +2 on the weekend.
Â
He was the lone FGCU golfer to shoot just one-over in the final round on the challenging par-70 Arlington Hills layout as
Grant Renegar shot a 73, but
Andrew Potter (Naples, Fla./Community School of Naples) recorded a final-round 77, along with
Doug Smith (Windermere, Fla./Olympia HS) and
Michael Keymont (Orlando, Fla./Eastern Florida State/Timber Creek HS).
Â
"It was a tough day, but golf is like life in many ways, and learning these lessons take time," commented head coach
Eric Booker. "It was a disappointing finish to the week, but I saw some good things throughout their rounds. They are becoming more accepting, and responding less to good and poor situations. Trusting their game is a challenge every day. I was pleased with Rob Renner's performance, and his progress on and off the course."
Â
Renner Jr. (Arlington Heights, Ill./Saint Viator HS) opened his round on the par-4, 415-yard 11th but promptly birdied the par-5 12th and made the turn in +1. After moving his scorecard to +2 on the day, he rolled in a birdie on the 2nd and played even-par golf the rest of the way en route to finishing as FGCU's low man.
Â
Renegar (McComb, Miss./ Meridian CC/Parklane Academy) was arguably the most consistent golfer in the Eagles' lineup as he parred 15 holes and recorded only three bogeys on his way to the three-over round.
Â
While Eastern Kentucky's tournament served as the first of the year for the Eagles, it was not supposed to be as FGCU was slated to compete in the Golfweek Conference Challenge last weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C., but that event was canceled due to Hurricane Irma.
Â
FGCU will next head to George Mason's Patriot Intercollegiate in Lorton, Va., Sept. 25-26.
