KENNESAW, Ga. – Behind another offensive explosion that included four more home runs, FGCU (37-17, 13-8 ASUN) capped off its weekend sweep at Kennesaw State (23-30, 10-11 ASUN) with a 13-3 win Saturday afternoon at Stillwell Stadium.
The Eagles fell in a 3-1 hole through two innings of play but used 12 unanswered runs and cruised to the sweep-clinching win. During the three-game set, FGCU outscored Kennesaw State 36-10 and outhit the Owls 35-18. The Green and Blue also capped off the weekend with 20 extra-base hits.
With 37 regular season wins, FGCU matched the 2010 and 2013 seasons for the second most regular season victories in Division I program history. The Eagles won 38 games during its first season as a DI program in 2008.
The win marks FGCU's ninth straight in league play, and the Eagles clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's ASUN Tournament after No. 4 UNF lost the regular season finale to Jacksonville. The Eagles and Ospreys will square off in DeLand, Fla., on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
During the nine-game conference win streak, the Green and Blue have totaled 100 runs on 119 hits and have turned in a 3.21 staff ERA.
With four more home runs in Saturday's regular season finale, FGCU finished off the weekend with 11 long balls. After hitting 22 home runs in the first 41 games of the season, the Eagles have totaled 30 home runs in its last 13 contests. At least one home run has been hit in 11 of those games with two or more coming in seven affairs.
"It feels good to finish off the regular season on a high note," said FGCU head coach
Dave Tollett. "Seemingly every batter in our lineup is swinging the bat with confidence right now, and we know our pitching staff can go toe-to-toe with anyone. Next week starts a whole new season and we will continue to take it one game at a time, but we're pleased with the momentum heading into the conference tournament."
FGCU hit a first-inning home run for the third straight game, this time as leadoff man
Julio Gonzalez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Seminole State College (OK)/Brito Miami Private HS) sent the third pitch he saw from Kennesaw State starter Chris Erwin over the fence in center field. It was Gonzaelz's fifth home run of the season and extended his hit streak to 10 games, which matches a season-long.
Kennesaw State answered right back as cleanup hitter Taylor Allum hit a two-out double to left-center field and scored Corey Greeson from first base. The Owls then took its first lead of the weekend when nine-hole hitter Daniel Seres followed a leadoff single from Jake Franklin with a one-out home run to left field.
After FGCU starting pitcher
Garrett Anderson (6-1, 3.72) tossed back-to-back scoreless frames and retired eight of nine batters faced following Seres' home run,
Elijah Lovell (Lincoln, Neb./Kansas City Kansas CC/Lincoln Southwest HS) followed a pair of two-out walks and gave the Green and Blue the lead back with a three-run home run to left field.
An inning later,
Spencer Levine (Miami, Fla./Seminole State College/Miami Killian Senior HS) got in on the barrage of long balls with a two-run shot to nearly the same spot in left field to extend the lead to 6-3.
Levine came back around to bat in the top of the seventh with nobody out and the bases loaded and hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
Jake Smith (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep) then collected his team-high third hit of the game with a two-RBI double down the right-field line to extend the lead to 9-3.
As
Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS) entered the game and continued to throw up zeroes with 3.0 hitless innings,
Marc Coffers (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) added to the advantage as he hit his second home run of the weekend and fourth this season – all in the last nine games – in the top of the eighth to make it a 12-3 ballgame. The three-run shot was a no-doubter that one-hopped the softball complex approximately 440 feet from home plate.
After added a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the top of the ninth,
Kenton Hering (Melbourne, Fla./Eastern Florida State/Viera HS) took the mound in the ninth and struck out a pair of Owls to finished off the 13-3 win. The trio of FGCU arms sat down 22 of the final 26 Kennesaw State batters following Seres' home run in the second inning.
Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) earned his sixth win of the season after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Opposite Anderson, Erwin suffered the loss. The Owls issued 29 walks in the three games this weekend.
From the plate, Smith and Coffers collected three hits apiece for the Green and Blue, while Lovell and
Corey Fehribach (Douglasville, Ga./West Georgia CC/Alexander HS) added a pair. Lovell, Coffers, and Levine all drove in three runs in the game. Additionally,
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), who hit four home runs in the first two games of the series, set the single-game program record and tied the NCAA record with six walks in the finale.
