SERIES HISTORY
The 2017 season-opening series marks the second time in program history the Eagles and Pioneers have squared off. Sacred Heart also traveled to Swanson Stadium for a four-game set in 2010, when FGCU took three of four from the visiting Pioneers. After dropping the opening game, 6-3, FGCU went on to win the next three contests by outscoring Sacred Heart 40-9.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Sacred Heart is coming off a 2016 season during which it posted a 30-28 overall record and went 18-13 in the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers won its opening game of the NEC Tournament vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-8, but dropped its next two contests to end its season. A year prior, after starting the season 0-10, Sacred Heart made a run through the conference tournament and appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history.

Offensively, the Pioneers hit .265 as a team and were a major threat on the base paths as they stole 85 bases in 58 games. Sophomore outfielder Kyle Oliver returns as the team's leading hitter in 2017 after hitting .333 during his freshman campaign. Junior outfield Dan Shock returns as Sacred Heart's biggest power threat after hitting a team-high nine home runs and slugging .466 in 2016.

On the mound, Sacred Heart turned in a 4.37 ERA last year and was led by the aforementioned Taubl, who put up a 2.16 ERA in 16 appearances. Upperclassmen Mike Lembo and Alex Perry combined for 27 appearances out of the bullpen a season ago and posted ERA's of 2.25 and 2.55, respectively.

MILESTONE IN SIGHT
FGCU's founding head coach Dave Tollett enters the 2017 season 10 wins shy of hitting the 500-win milestone. The four-time ASUN Coach of the Year who has led the Green and Blue to four ASUN Regular Season Conference Championships has recorded 30 or more wins in 11 of his 14 seasons, including a program record 41 wins in 2006. He has led the Eagles to a winning mark in conference play in eight of nine seasons in the ASUN. Tollett would join Kennesaw State's Mike Sansing and UNF's Smoke Laval as the only active head coaches in the ASUN with 500 or more wins.

HE'S BAAACCCKKK
As the ASUN Preseason All-Conference Honors and Awards were announced at the end of January, redshirt senior designated hitter Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) found his name appear on the All-Conference Team for the third straight season. The hometown slugger returns to the FGCU lineup after missing all but 17 games a season ago with a wrist injury. A 2015 Louisville Slugger All-American, Rivera drove in a Division I program record 70 RBI to go along with a career-high 10 home runs and .347 average in his junior campaign. Following the 2015 season, he was selected by the Houston Astros in the 38th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft.

KEY RETURNERS
Along with the aforementioned Rivera, leadoff man and middle infielder Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) highlights a list of talented and experienced returner for FGCU. Reardon, who earned ASUN All-Tournament Team honors in 2016, is the team's leading returner in runs (42), hits (80) and RBI (25). He will likely join ASUN All-Freshman Team honoree Jake Smith (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep), who hit .443 in conference games in 2016, as a pair of table setters for the middle of the FGCU order.

On the mound, a trio of upperclassmen in Leon, Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carroll HS) and 2016 ASUN All-Tournament Team member Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) will likely spearhead the FGCU pitching staff. With the addition of Crawford and the return of the injured Josh Dye (DeLand, Fla./DeLand HS), both of who will likely find a role in the Eagles' weekend rotation, the Green and Blue look to be much improved from a season ago.

FRESH FACES
FGCU welcomes one of the largest and arguably most talented incoming classes in program history with 22 newcomers joining the Green and Blue this season. The class, which consists of 13 freshmen and nine Junior College transfers, is highlighted by 2016 NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American Eli Lovell (Lincoln, Neb./Kansas City Kansas CC/Lincoln Southwest HS). With KCKCC last season, Lovell ranked in the top-15 in the NJAA in average (.451), hits (96), RBI (83) and total bases (174). He also slugged 15 home runs and scored 70 times in 57 games. Lovell and fellow Junior College transfer Spencer Levine (Miami, Fla./Seminole State/Miami Killian Senior HS), who hit 14 home runs a season ago and was named First Team All-Conference by the Mid-Florida League, will likely team up with Rivera to add the pop in the middle of the FGCU order.
