FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team (19-8, 9-3 ASUN) will wrap up its regular season with matchups against reigning ASUN champion Lipscomb (14-11, 7-5 ASUN) and current ASUN leader Kennesaw State (17-4, 11-1 ASUN) this weekend.
On Friday,
Courtney Stephens will be recognized as part of senior night prior to the match. She is the team's lone senior and currently sits in fifth place on the program's career digs list.
Both matches will be streamed online with John Vittas and Jamie Morrison doing the play by play and color, respectively. The Lipscomb match will be via Facebook Live, and Kennesaw State will be on ESPN3. Both matches will have live stats, as well.
JOSTLING IN THE ASUN
Kennesaw State (11-1), Jacksonville (10-2), FGCU (9-3) and Lipscomb (7-5) are the top four teams in the ASUN entering this weekend. With a win over Lipscomb, FGCU will clinch at least the third seed in the ASUN Championship. The Eagles also still have an outside chance at the second seed should they win both and Jacksonville stumble against NJIT and USC Upstate. Kennesaw State, meanwhile, is looking to clinch the ASUN regular season title. They can wrap up the top seed and at least a share of the ASUN regular season championship with a win over Stetson on Friday.
The ASUN Championship will be held Nov. 16-18 in Nashville, Tenn. at Lipscomb's Allen Arena. More info on the event can be found
here.
THE GREEN AND BLUE
Led by stellar individual performances such as
Snowy Burnam's, the FGCU volleyball team will enter this weekend having won two straight.
Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS), who averaged 13.5 kills and 14 digs while hitting .453 in wins over NJIT and USC Upstate, is the reigning ASUN Freshman of the Week. She has 10 or more kills in five straight matches, and she hit at least .310 in four of those. Over the past four matches, she has recorded her four highest single match dig totals this year.
In the team's win over USC Upstate this past Sunday, Burnam,
Cortney VanLiew,
Amanda Carroll and
Maggie Rick all had double-doubles.
Rick (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity Catholic HS) totaled a season-high in assists (60) and digs (13) for her double-double, while
VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS) had 14 kills and 12 digs.
Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) had 10 kills and 13 digs for her fourth straight double-double, and Burnam had season-highs in kills (17) and digs (17).
Danielle Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) now has 156 career block assists, which is four shy of passing Lauren Tutwiler (159, 2014-15) for seventh most all-time in program history.
Giovanna Borgiotti (Vienna, Va./George C. Marshall HS) had 14 of her 22 kills over the weekend in the win over NJIT on Friday.
Kaitlan Krivdo (Hope Mills, N.C./Grays Creek HS) now has at least six kills in three of the past four and seven matches overall this year.
Defensively,
Stephens (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) recorded a career-high 23 digs against USC Upstate. It was her fourth career match with at least 20, and she's averaging nearly 14 digs over the past four outings.
Karissa Rhoades (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale Senior HS) enters this weekend with at least 10 digs in 11 of the past 12 matches.
Sharonda Pickering (Sea Cow's Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands/Elmore Stoutt HS) has 48 blocks this year, which is second on the team. She does have a team-high 0.98 blocks per set, though.
FGCU is currently leading the ASUN in hitting percentage (.265), which ranks 24th in the country. They are second in total kills (1,292), kills/set (14.04), assists/set (13.18) and total blocks (197). Carroll is second in the conference in kills (380), kills/set (4.37) and is fifth in hitting percentage (.293). Rick leads the conference with 1,044 total assists and 11.35 assists per set. The latter is 19th best in the nation.
SCOUTING LIPSCOMB
The Bisons are coming off a split weekend against Jacksonville and North Florida.
Junior Carlyle Nusbaum won her ninth career ASUN Player of the Week award after back-to-back double-double performances that totaled 52 kills and 29 digs. She eclipsed 1,200 career kills against North Florida, and her nine POTW awards is the most in conference history. She leads the ASUN in kills (431) and points (457.0), and her 5.01 kills/set and 5.3 points/set rank fourth and ninth, respectively, in the country.
Lauren Anderson has double-digit kill outings in six straight and eight of her past nine. Ashley Maher has eight or more digs in six straight matches, and Morgan Elmore recorded a career-high 55 assists against Jacksonville last weekend. She has 40 or more assists in six straight, and her 714 assists is fifth most in the ASUN.
FGCU is 6-16 all-time against Lipscomb and have lost eight of the past 10, but the Eagles produced a big three-set win over the Bisons on Sept. 30. With a win, FGCU would record its first season sweep of Lipscomb since 2012.
SCOUTING KENNESAW STATE
The Owls are looking to clinch the program's first ASUN regular season championship and its first ever season sweep of FGCU.
Kristi Piedimonte ranks eighth on the ASUN's all-time assists list with 3,809. She has three-straight matches with 30 or more assists. Lisa Engelbrecht, who totaled 13 blocks last weekend against North Florida and Jacksonville, is the reigning ASUN Defensive Player of the Week.
