KISSIMMIEE, Fla. – The FGCU women's golf team fired a program-best score of 290 Monday, April 11 at the 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship and improved to second place among the field. The Eagles maintain a team score of 593 (303-290) with one round remaining at Reunion Resort.
Â
The Eagles entered Tuesday's play nine strokes out of Kennesaw State's lead and quickly diminished the gap with strong play across the board. The Green and Blue put together the plus-2 round to take over second place in the field and stands just one stroke behind North Florida's lead of 592. FGCU now holds a five-stroke advantage over third-place Kennesaw State and leads Jacksonville, Stetson, Lipscomb and USC Upstate by at least 13 strokes.
Â
"I am so happy for the girls," said head coach
Sarah Trew. "They played amazing today. It has been a goal of ours all year to break a scoring record and we did that today. Each team member has done a tremendous job of staying composed and process orientated since our first tee shot yesterday. Madeline and Myka had a great day and were both able to bounce back and help us in a big way. Madeline got out to a hot start and it was great to see her put up a round under par. Myka settled back in and played consistently all day.
Â
"All we can ask for is to put ourselves in contention going into the final round and we did that in a big way today. I think the confidence of putting together the best round of the tournament is going to be a big boost going into the final round. Tomorrow is about sticking to the game plan that has brought us here. We'll focus on the process and playing with confidence until the last putt drops."
Â
FGCU's team score stands as a program record and topped all teams in the field. The mark is four strokes better than KSU's first-round score and was four better that UNF's second-round score. Â It also stands one stroke better than the team's previous record of 291, set at the 2013 A-Sun Championship.
Â
The team score includes three scores at 73 or better and five at 80 or lower. With the strong individual play, the Eagles hold four of the top nine positions on the leaderboard with four players tied for sixth or better. Â
Â
Madeline Marck-Sherk (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway Crystal Beach High School) led the Green and Blue and produced the field's top score with a 70 during the second round of competition. Easterbrook fired nine even-par scores through her first 11 holes and went into the final stretch at plus-2. She added just two bogeys in her last seven holes and finished at plus-4 on the day.
