@FGCU_Baseball Comes Up Empty in 1-0 Loss at Bethune-Cookman

Lack of Run Support Behind Strong Outing From Anderson Dooms Eagles

Story Links

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Coming off a season-high 17 hits in game one Friday night, the FGCU (3-7) bats went quiet for much of game two as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Bethune-Cookman (4-5) Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

A two-out RBI single from B-CU catcher Michael Cruz that scored Josten Heron in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the two teams combined for only one run on 12 hits less than 24 hours after tallying 15 runs on 30 hits in game one.

Redshirt senior Brady Anderson (0-3, 2.41) suffered the tough-luck loss for FGCU as he allowed the lone run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 8.0 innings of work. In his last two outings against the Wildcats, Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) has allowed two runs (one earned) with 15 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched. The Desoto County product faced only two batters over the minimum and allowed one hit through the first five innings but gave up the leadoff single to Heron, who later came around to score, to start the sixth.

Opposite the FGCU starter, B-CU right hander Tyler Norris (2-0, 3.55) earned the win after allowing three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 shutout innings. Nate Sterijevski recorded the final out of the game and received the save for the Wildcats.

"We got a good outing out of Brady today but couldn't give him any run support," said FGCU head coach Dave Tollett. "It's frustrating that we can't seem to put it together from both a pitching and hitting standpoint, but the signs are there."

With two outs and the bases loaded in the last frame, FGCU second baseman Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS), who delivered the go-ahead hit in the top of the ninth inning Friday night, stepped to the plate in a similar situation but skied a 2-1 pitch to B-CU shortstop Demetrius Sims to end the game.

Three innings earlier, the Eagles failed to capitalize on an almost identical scoring opportunity as they again loaded the bases with two outs. However, after a 3-for-5 night from the plate with three runs and three RBI in game one, first baseman Tyler Atwell (Venice, Fla./Tallahassee CC) stepped to the plate in a big spot but struck out swinging to end the scoring threat.

FGCU also looked primed to tie the score or take the lead in the top of the eighth inning. After back-to-back singles from Noll and Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) put runners on the corners with one out, Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) attempted to drop down a safety squeeze, but bunted it back to the pitcher rather than down either foul line. Noll broke for home regardless and was cut down at the plate.

The Green and Blue, which registered six hits with runners in scoring position Friday night, went 2-for-9 in the category during game two and 0-for-2 with the bases loaded after coming up empty in the top of the sixth inning and again in the ninth.

Noll led the FGCU offense with a 2-for-5 day from the plate and was the lone Eagle who turned in a multiple-hit game, his team-leading sixth of the season. The Charlotte, Fla., native has reached safely in every game this season and is now riding a season-high, eight-game hit streak.

The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. FGCU will likely send right hander Mario Leon (0-1, 4.82) to the mound to take on the Wildcats' German Hernandez (2-0, 0.00).
