FORT MYERS, Fla. – Despite the original field being diminished by the effects of Hurricane Matthew, the FGCU women's tennis team made the most of their opportunity to host a trio of teams including in-state rival UCF, Big Ten opponent Minnesota and ASUN-foe Stetson at the FGCU Tennis Complex this weekend.
"The ladies have made some great progress already this fall," said FGCU head coach
Courtney Vernon. "They are committing to the plan and are learning to trust themselves on the court. I'm excited to see how they grow and what they choose to experience this year. They're looking forward to competing again at the ITA Regionals in Gainesville."
In singles play, FGCU posted a 13-3 overall record in the three days of competition with nine of those wins coming in straight sets. The Eagles went a perfect 4-0 in singles matches vs. UCF after earning the program's first win against the Knights a season ago. Additionally, the Green and Blue went 5-2 in matches against Power-Five opponent Minnesota and 4-1 against Stetson, who they defeated in the ASUN semifinals last season.
In doubles competition, FGCU saw more of the same success as the Eagles were victorious in 10 of 15 matches throughout the weekend. The Green and Blue were led by 2016 ASUN All-Conference tandem
Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and
Julianna Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy), who went a perfect 5-0 as a pair this weekend with three of those matches being decided by four or more points.
Complete results from this weekend are included below.
