FORT MYERS, Fla. – With just nine hours of rest after last night's late finish, the FGCU baseball team (29-25-1, 11-9 A-Sun) kept their championship hopes alive on Thursday afternoon by defeating defending tournament champion Kennesaw State (28-28, 10-10 A-Sun) by a score of 6-2. The Eagles will now move on to face Lipscomb, Stetson or Jacksonville, depending upon results, at 3 p.m. on Friday.

FGCU's All-Conference Second Team member Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) would out-duel All-Conference First Team choice Travis Bergen, going 7.0 innings while only giving up seven hits and two runs. Freshman Josh Dye (Deland, Fla./Deland HS) was dominant over 2.0 innings of relief in his first postseason appearance. He did not allow a base runner and struck out one.

Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) highlighted one of three Eagles to collect two hits on Thursday with a 2-4 effort including a two-run homerun, his third of the season. Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) and Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College) each added two hits while Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) finally found his stroke in this tournament with a two-run double. The Green and Blue would collect nine hits overall and drive in all six runs.

"It was great to see our guys come out and play like that after such a late night," head coach Dave Tollett said. "Brady was so good for us and Dye came in and shut them down after our bats really woke up. We are going to take this one game at a time. Right now we are going to enjoy this win and go get some rest."

The next opponent for the Eagles will become easier to determine after the North Florida/Jacksonville matchup currently taking place at Swanson Stadium. Should No. 4 Jacksonville knock off top-seeded UNF the Eagles will square off with the Dolphins tomorrow. If the Ospreys eliminate JU on Thursday afternoon, the Eagles will await the loser of the No. 2 Lipscomb/No. 3 Stetson game which is set to take place at 7 p.m.

Anderson surrendered a leadoff single to Grant Williams in the top of the first and Kal Simmons attempted a sacrifice bunt. The attempt forced Rivera into to hole at first but he fielded the ball cleanly and tossed it to a hustling Anderson who slid into first to record the out. Williams attempted to move up to third on the play but Anderson made the heads-up play and threw to third to get Williams by several steps. Chris Erwin then flew out to left to end the inning.

Spivey led off the bottom of the second against Bergen with a single to center and Bottomley followed suit with a single over the infield and into shallow left. Eggnatz sacrifice both runners into scoring position and it was Berger who dealt the first blow after working a deep 3-2 count. He sent a pop fly to shallow left that would fall between the converging defense, allowing Spivey to score the first run. Bryan Voelkl followed with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-0 and that would be all for the Green and Blue in the second.

Nick Rivera led off the bottom of the third by bouncing a ball toward third that Howell couldn't handle. He would reach and bring Noll to the plate who turned on a first-pitch fastball and send a high-arching homerun over the wall in left, his third of the season, to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead against First Team All-Conference choice Travis Bergen.

Kennesaw State finally found its way on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Simmons would send a bouncing ball of the middle that Noll ranged over and backhanded the ball but in no position to make a play on Simmons. Noll slipped and opted to throw the ball anyway and his toss would soar over Rivera's head at first to allow the runner to move into scoring position. A groundout put the runner on third and McGowan followed with a walk. A passed ball on the very next pitch brought in Simmons to make it 4-1. Following a fly out, Alex Liquori doubled down the line in right to bring in the second run of the inning.

Berger led off the bottom half of the sixth with a single and Brian Pruett (Sarasota, Fla./Coastal Carolina) pinch ran. Pruett stole second and Voelkl laid down a bunt to put a runner on third for Reardon who grounded out to first. Selesky followed with a walk and Rivera came up with runners on the corners. The junior worked a 3-2 count against Bergen, putting the runners in motion with two away and he would deliver a double over the head of the center fielder, driving in two and putting the Eagles ahead 6-2.
